Avalon High

I was first introduced to Meg Cabot's "Avalon High" through the Disney Channel film adaptation. Upon learning that the movie differed quite a bit from Cabot's book, I decided it best to read the book to see what I was missing.

Upon completion of the book, I enjoy the book slightly more than the Disney movie. I love how the events in the book, such as the affair between Lance and Jennifer, Will's father having sent his best friend into a fire fight only to then marry the man's widow, and the truth about Will's mother's death more closely mirror aspects of the Arthurian legend than the movie. I also liked how each chapter had a verse from Tennyson's "The Lady of Shalott" as a little entrance to the chapter because I have always enjoyed the poem and it was nice to revisit it in context with the book.

Being a fan of Arthurian legend, I'm really glad I took the time to read this book and would definitely recommend it to fans of both young adult literature as well as fans of Arthurian legend; and, if you have only seen the Disney movie, definitely give the book a read.

4 star rating.

I finished this book in about a day and a half...it was that good!

I still love this book.
This book got me into the lore of King Arthur.
Plus, I have the manga coming.

Movie was muuuch better.

When Ellie Harrison starts school at Avalon High she expects to have to make new friends and fit in at a new place. What she doesn't expect is to fall in love with the QB who just happens to be a modern reincarnation of King Arthur (of the Round Table). As her relationship with Will (first initial A for Arthur) and his friend Lance (Lancelot) and his girlfriend Jennifer (Guinevere) gets more complicated, everyone assumes that she is Elaine, the Lady of Shallott, who fell in love with Lancelot from afar. The one problem is that Will and Ellie are falling for each other which does not fit the Arthurian legend. When a family secret is exposed, Will's stepbrother (who is actually his half brother) threatens to tear Will and Ellie apart.
This was a quick entertaining read and you didn't need to know much about Arthurian legends in order to understand the book as it was nicely explained within the text.

Cabot, who is also the author of The Princess Diaries, does a wonderful job of combining modern suspense and romance with the history of the Arthurian legends. Of course, it doesn't hurt that she quotes liberally from Miss D's favorite poem The Lady of Shallot by Alfred, Lord Tennyson - and yes I can hear all of my students past and present groaning! Ellie comes to Avalon High and discovers that while it seems normal on the surface there are strange events swirling around several students, including herself. Is the star quarterback really the reincarnation of King Arthur? Are his best friend, Lance, and his girlfriend, Jennifer, cheating behind his back? Is his weird step-brother Marco really Mordred? And what about her own part in this Arthurian drama? A thoroughly enjoyable tale of romance, betrayal, and suspense, and a great introduction to the Arthurian legends. And did I mention there's Tennyson - OK, OK!

I found Another Faust to be an intriguing read. I kept reading on through it because I wanted to know more about what was going on.

There's very little action in Another Faust. Basically, there's just a tiny little bit. So if you love books that aren't just action, action, action then this book would definitely intrigue you.

I didn't absolutely love Another Faust but I found it to be a really interesting concept. Overall I would say that it was a good book. If I ever see it in shops I'll definitely buy a copy.

The characters were all really interesting. I don't know if I have a favourite or not but I think possibly Victoria just because of how different she was to other characters I'd ever read about before.

Another Faust is based on the Faustian Legend the most famous of which is Faust written by Goethe. I'm not really familiar with it but I vaguely knew the idea of it and from what I knew I can say that I thought Another Faust was an interesting way of putting a spin on the Faustian Bargain.

I quite liked the ending of Another Faust. It wasn't too bad. I think that the way the ending couldn't really go any other way. But it also left an opening for a second book if there ever wanted to be one.

The next book in the series is called Another Pan and I'm not really sure what it's going to be about but I will definitely be reading it out of interest and curiosity.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this to other people. But if you are looking for a book full of action this one isn't really for you. But definitely check it out even if you're not familiar with the Faustian Legend.

Meg Cabot is a really versatile writer. I think that is maybe what attracts so many different readers to her. While venturing into different genres, she is able to keep a certain voice that makes it enjoyable to a reader who maybe doesn't like that specific genre. I had first heard of Avalon High back when the Disney Channel adaption started playing previews. Curious, I looked it up and realized it was this book. I read the book prior to watching the movie and I actually like it a lot more. I still liked the movie but the book was a lot funner for me to read. I really enjoyed it and I'm sure that anyone else who decides to pick it up will to!

I am sad and a predictable teen-girl, but I found Avalon High a lovely book. Like Cabot's other novels, it's geared towards the target audience of pre-teen and teenage girls, and as such, won't really ever appeal to anyone not fitting in that bracket. Having said that, I really loved this book... but a warming that anyone who dislikes Meg Cabot's writing style won't enjoy this at all as that was the winning factor for me, out of everything in this.

LOVED this book. Meg Cabot really outdid herself with this one. I'm a hater of all things historical-fiction, but this book not only is my favorite historical fiction book, but one of my favorite books ever. <3
