this book really does not hold up when you're older. i remember being quite into it when i read it in elementary school and then reading it again and finding myself rolling my eyes at certain points and skimming some parts. oh well.

Mehhhhhh. I would have liked this WAY more if I had read it when I first discovered Meg Cabot. Oh well

Avalon High is a modern retelling of the Legend of King Arthur. Ellie is new in town and to Avalon High. Her parents are both college professors who specialize in medieval times and they've moved with Ellie to Annapolis because they are both on sabbatical for a year. While out running, Ellie meets Will, one of the most popular boys at school. He tells her that he feels like he's known her in another lifetime. Ellie doesn't think much of it until more strange things begin to happen. She slowly puts the pieces together and realizes that the Arthurian Legend is playing out in her school. If you aren't familiar with the Legend of King Arthur, don't worry. Cabot works in detailed explanations of the legend throughout the book.

I enjoyed this book. It was a cute high school romance with elements of suspense. Ellie was a realistic, likeable character. So was Will - I would have loved to have had him as my boyfriend in high school!

I listened to the audio version of this book which was narrated by Debra Wiseman. I thought she did a great job with both the male and female voices. However, one of the characters has a British accent and I didn't think her British accent was very good so that was distracting.

I didn't find out until after I'd finished this book that the rest of the books in this series are graphic novels. I'm disappointed because I love listening to Meg Cabot's books in the car and I'm assuming that there aren't audio versions of the graphic novels. On the other hand, I've never read a graphic novel before so reading them could be a new and exciting experience for me.

I read this years ago but I remember really enjoying it and then reading the follow up graphic novel (which was not long enough for me!). I'm pretty sure I even read this twice, which I don't usually do!

It might be my BA in English Literature, but I really did appreciate Meg Cabot bringing forth so much of the Lady of Shallot and Arthurian folklore into this. I have a fond appreciation of literature before 1500.

Unlike her other books which end being fantastical in the general nature of their circumstances and perspectives (Mia's a riot and I love "The Princess Diaries" series, but it is outlandish at times), Avalon High is YA teen fiction meets sci-fi/fantasy and that's a nice change of pace.

Perhaps the best element is knowing that younger people who are reading Avalon High can benefit from learning about history and literature without even realizing it. For those already knowledgable, the book is an enjoyable modern-day spin on things.

I love retellings and I love Arthurian stories. When I was younger, Avalon High was one of my favorite Disney Channel movies. Which made me really curious to the book it was based on.
This is also why I like the story, even though I have to get used to reading mostly Ellie’s thoughts and summary’s instead of actual dialogue. At first it was a bit annoying, but with the chapters I learned to appreciate the insight it gave into Ellie. But for me, a bit more dialogue would be better to also get your own opinion on the characters.
But my love for the movie is also why I miss certain characters and twists I vaguely remember from the movie and now are left out. More could have been done with this plot, more action, thrilling moments and interaction. Keeping the target group and genre in mind, it is an okay book which I’m sure I’ll be re-reading with time.

I really liked this book, it was my first (when I was a kid obviously) book of mixing worlds. I love the twist on the characters.

I demolisheeeed this book.
It was so fun to be in Ellie's head.
I've always been a sucker for mythology and legends and the Camelot aspect really did me in.

3.5 stars! This one has been on my TBR for years. Like 8 years. It was really cute, and a quick read. I'm glad I finally picked it up!
