When did I first read this? 2009? Wow, it has been a while, and I think I enjoyed it more this time around. When I first wanted to get into "classic literature," this was my starting point since I had just seen the musical. Even though it is not my favorite Gothic novel ever, it helped inspire me to study literature in the first place. Now, as a grad student in literature soon to finish her degree, I can see it with different eyes. I mean that both literally and metaphorically as this is one of the last books I was able to read in print back in the day. So much has changed, but as I said, I think I can appreciate this novel more now since I am more familiar with literature of its time as well as the works it references. When I read it last time, I hadn't read Frankenstein or Othello so I wasn't able to appreciate the parallels, and I was a complete newbie to Gothic literature. What strikes me this time is how unstable and childish the Phantom comes off--much more than in the musical. He's not as "cool," and we are never asked to view him that way. He is not as eloquent or understandable as Frankenstein's creature which makes him seem all the more deranged. Still, the novel does evoke sympathy for him. The tragedy still pulls at the heart strings, and I love the melodrama. What more could you ask from a night at the opera?
