Heads up, I have not seen the musical adaptations this story had, so this book was my first encounter with this story.
I don't know how much influence my enjoyment of this story had to with its translation and how much with the source material (I read the Amazon Classics edition, but there isn't listed who translated it).
The story was good, with the potential for greatness but I had my problems with the writing style, I find it a bit of a struggle to follow. But that aside I found the story was quite intriguing. I was suprised to find it more dark or the Phantom to be portrayed more sinister/actively involved than I had expected like the the insistence on his box, or the scene where Isidor Saack runs away from the theatre and there is this conversation about it: "Then the ghost had not broken his leg?", asked M. Moncharmin, a little vexed that his figure had made so little impression on Mme Giry. "He did break it for him, sir", replied Mme Giry haughtily." - kind of haunting - also the mirrors.
Also the scene where the Phantom kidnaps Christine the first time and we get the descriptions of a palace with roses and him being masked and the music all -reminded me a bit of that house/scene from V for Vendetta, I don't know if they drew inspiration from Phantom of the Opera but very similar.
All in all, I think I would have enjoyed this more if I had clicked better with the writing style , but I liked the story itself. Maybe I'm gonna watch one of the musical/movie adaptations if I can get my hands on them.

This is a very well written classic. Besides the fact that it was written in the early 1900s and thus the way they describe/talk about the character only known as "the Persian" is reflective of the views/culture in France at the time of its writing, it's overall still an interesting and engaging book by today's standards.
On a less serious note - the fact that I watched the Phantom of the Opera (the Gerald Butler/Emmy Rossum musical version) as a kid and thought Raoul was a little bitch boy - I feel vindicated. It's canon.
