Classics like this one make me so grateful that modern authors try to shorten their sentences and keep the unnecessary details to a minimum.
Wonderful! Fun! Spooky! Listened to it as an audiobook which made it so much better. Now I can watch the live action version in peace. I looked up the reading level about halfway through because I was like, “this is really good!” 7-9th grade. LOL. Anyways Anna if you are reading this you inspired this venture.

Seeking this book in the library for ages, I finally got it and could get deep into the Phantom's lair.
I read this book when I was a teenager in my mother tongue and the details were blurry. I got the details from the musical (which I was singing every time in my head).
It is definitely different from the musical. For those that are not familiar with the original, they will find that the book is much more into the mystery genre rather than the romantic one. Here, if the musical didn't display it already, we can see much more the toxic and obsessive feelings of Erik towards Christine, in that manner of the Gothic genre.
The characters, especially the Phantom, are not loveable, and they should not be. For this is a story of twisted feelings disguised as love, devotion.
While I was reading the book I had the feelings that it was not as I remembered, but then again, I read it ages ago in another language, whereas this time I read it in English. Moreover, I wonder if different editions have different styles and translation.
This is a truly enjoyable story that uses real items such as the Garnier opera or the lake underneath to create a world of mystery and magic. The writing is concise and clear enough to follow the pace without getting overwhelming or boring.
Beware then, for the Phantom can hear it all. And keep your hand at the level of your eyes!
