If this had been my first Koontz experience, I would not have read any further.

I'd have given this four stars for the start of the story and how shocking and unexpected it was!
But I'd also have given it two stars for pretty much all the rest of the story that never quite bores you or loses your interest, but never again manages to capture and hold you like the beginning did.

Also I find the back of the book doesn't really prepare you for the story, but that's a small thing easily fixed by Google.

I feel the book could have been condensed to half it's size to keep the story thrilling and imaginative.
It's a choppy, chonky, long read really only recommended for the fans.

entertaining to say the least but Koontz is no physicist and perhaps i have read too many science books before this one to fully appreciate the interest it probably inspires in others to pursue further reading in quantum physics.

Woah, what a read. It took me longer than I would have liked but such a huge book was pretty intimidating. This was a very intense, very emotional and very HEAVY read (Mentally and physically ;) )
I loved reading this. The story was entirely captivating and Koonz has a way of immediately establishing who a character is and making sure you almost immediately decide how you feel about them. Just when he brings in a character that seems unimportant, they show up at critical moments and prove to be vital.
Koonz is brilliant with making you panic and worry for characters. In just the first 100 pages of this book, I was close to tears three times. It's an emotional rollercoaster for sure.
Why not 5 stars:
- I skipped over Edom and Jacob's dialogue most of the time and felt that I missed absolutely nothing. Loved the characters but they were tiresome to read and I found myself a little disappointed whenever we were in their POV
- I felt like sometimes the descriptions went on for a bit longer than necessary. With such a long, heavy read, near to the end of the book I found myself scanning past descriptive paragraphs to get back to the action
- I hesitate to use the word "climax" of the story because there were so many climactic moments but the "FINAL SHOWDOWN" if you will, was slightly lacking for me based on everything we got in the rest of the book. Just unexplained and then super quick resolution is all.

Great read. Would recommend to someone who isn't feint of heart and is up for a taxing, emotional, thought-provoking, heart-pounding, tear-jerking read. :)

I finished this really quickly mainly because I didn’t sleep after a night shift, but I found it was a nice easy read and a good story, one of my first Dean Koontz books and look forward to reading more

Great book about loss, rebuilding and chosen family. Includes references to Robert Heinlein's books, a totally nasty villain, and the potential for rare talents.

This is incredibly well written, by someone who cares about the beauty of the language, about compelling storytelling, about the important things in life.

Read other reviews to learn more about the story. I'll just say it is a high-quality novel that doesn't disappoint.

2017 Popsugar - book with an ugly cover (which is a stupid prompt)

I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by this book. As far as I know, I've only ever read one other book by Koonz and it was 20+ years ago and I have no memory of it. His writing is great (if disturbing and disgusting at times). I did feel that the ending was a bit of a cop-out, so that was a bit disappointing. Otherwise, a fine thriller/horror/suspense read.
