The author truly captures Shay's voice, allowing us to connect with her as she faces parental pressure, questions her identity, and stands up against injustice with her friends Lex and Ana by her side. This story seamlessly combines fantasy elements with relevant social commentary, exploring themes of power dynamics and consent with a touch of humor and authenticity, especially during the teenaged love, flirty scenes and the high school drama club practices. With beautifully crafted prose and an engaging narrative, this is a captivating read that will resonate with fans of young adult fiction and magical realism.

I adored this book and everything it did to bring Shay, Ana, Lex, and many more to life. The writing style is fun and accessible, the world within the story relates to our own so much, and it has witch and wizard students in a musical! The themes in this book are so, so important for the YA genre to have. This is definitely a top read of 2023 for me.

3.75
Graphic: Toxic relationship, Lesbophobia, Racism, and Adult/minor relationship
Moderate: Bullying, Classism, and Emotional abuse
The main conflict of the book (that is revealed early on) centers around a white, male teacher manipulating and taking advantage of female students. His racism is frequently called out, but very present. Many characters hold classist beliefs about college educations specifically.daenknight's review against another edition

really like a 4.75 but still so good. this was so fun and queer and black and set in florida and i am queer and black and from florida so it feels deeply made for me. i love witches and i loved the MC banter and an academic validation trope and an enemies to lovers. the grooming threw me off a lil (just wish i had a warning) but was handled rly w a lot of care and sensitivity. so so so so good and fun and witchy!!!
