I think these essays are somehow better on their own than in a compilation; but that might be because I don’t think they ought to be contrasted or alternatively taken as a whole. Some essays I adored, others left me cold, some I just skipped through easily to get to the next one. I won’t be rushing to buy another essay collection, but I think this book will stay on my shelf

probably my favorite nonfiction book so far. reading about the different types of love, it’s nice.
4.5 stars.
In this powerful and wholly human collection, readers are given opportunities to explore all of the facets, triumphs, and trials of complex, intimate relationships—with parents, siblings, children and lovers. I'm a huge fan of the show, so when I picked this book up I had high expectations, and Jones delivered. All pieces felt so personal and vulnerable. I have no words, so imma just highlight a few personal standouts:
- Single, unemployed, and suddenly myself (Marisa Lascher)
- So he looked like dad. It was just dinner, right? (Abby Sher)
- Truly, madly, guiltily (Ayelet Waldman)
- Rallying to keep the game alive (Ann Leary)
- When mr.reliable becomes mr.needy (Katherine Tanney)
- Beyond divorce, and even death, a promise kept (Jennifer Just)
You can find these essays in the New York Times Modern Love column, highly recommend you to check them out!
