MODERN LOVE (EDITED) BY DANIEL JONES is an essay collection on stories of love in its various forms, collated from the popular New York Times column. Don’t expect typical boy-meets-girl stories with predictable happy endings here, the contributing writers have instead focused on significant encounters in their life that may not necessarily classify as romantic love. There’s platonic love between a woman and her doorman; a couple adopting their baby daughter; a man reflecting on the relationship between his apathetic mother and his father who suffered from dementia; a couple finding love in their 70’s - just to name a few.
The essays were shorter than i expected, often only 3 or 4 pages long so this is the perfect book to dip in and out of while you have other ones on the go. Some of the stories are on the wholesome and warming side while others are less so and more heartbreaking. But i think the bittersweetness is the beauty of it - it’s real, raw and just what you’d expect from true encounters.
Having seen the TV show prior to reading, i must admit that i prefer that format compared to reading the essays. I think a lot of them benefit from the ‘show, don’t tell’ element, as many of the pieces come across as detached and i was less emotionally invested in them as a whole. Still worth picking up if you’re looking for love stories on the more unconventional side.

7/10 I liked some essays better than others. I struggle with short stories but really enjoyed some of these.
While I live in the U.S., where the NY Times "Modern Love" column and new TV series are very popular, I wasn't familiar with either one until recently. I picked up this essay collection purely because I wanted to read about the ups and downs of love outside of my own life experience. I was sick of dwelling on my own heartache and wanted to hear about someone else's experience with love.
That's exactly what I got—an honest, beautiful look at humanity and the ways that love (in its many forms) hurts us, confuses us, stretches us, delights us, and restores us. It's clear why these particular essays made the collection. They're breathtaking. They're well-written, vulnerable, and moving, which made for a tightly put together and heartwarming collection. By being so up close and personal, the essays express how love exposes us. By showcasing the stories of so many kinds of people, they symbolize how love helps us have empathy for those whose lives aren't like ours.
I appreciated that the essays handled more than just romantic love. These real-life love stories are about a host of diverse, unique experiences, giving an intimate look at love when it meets mental illness, impending death, a transgender spouse, a special needs child, etc. There are essays about families and children, and friendships come and gone. And for every one of them, a striking portrait of how complicated life and love can be. I highly recommend it.

This book is for poetry fans. The writing style is very metaphorical and deep - a bit too deep for me. I was very bored throughout this whole book, and didn't get the full appreciation out of the stories. This book was made into a tv series on Amazon Prime and I watched one episode, but still couldn't get into the stories. These are all excerpts taken from The New York Times.

I’m so glad I finally picked this one up. Nonfiction essays are not something I typically gravitate towards, but I really enjoyed the MODERN LOVE series on Amazon so I knew I wanted to give these a shot. I took my time and read a few stories each night before bed and it was a great way to end each day.

What I particularly loved was how it showcased many different types of love. Not only romantic love but parental love, self love, friend love. It was a nice reminder that one doesn’t have to be in a romantic relationship to experience love and support.

Alright, enough mushy gushy feelings. What other essay collection do you think I might like?
I received a free copy of the book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I love how these essays not only talk about 'love' that we've already knew before—love between a woman and a man—but also other form of love that also exist although we haven't realized it yet

This might probably be last last book I read this year and it was lovely.
The book is a collection of stories under the topic of love. What I love is that It’s not only romantic love that is in scope.
The stories are real, crisp and beautiful. They show love of parents, significant others ( LGBTQIA) , marriages, divorces , friends, acquaintances.
It’s not sappy like chicken soup for the soul kinda way but more like this is life types.
I watched the series before reading the book , this still don’t spoil my enjoyment. It can be re-read as well.
I strongly recommend watching the prime series with the same name . I think the tele series gives a little extra back story/‘more bytes . For people like me who are greedy to really see more in a good story. The “ aww I wish the authors wrote some more ,too bad it wrapped up when we were having fun” kinda people.
It hits many prompts of the 2022 pop sugar challenge : sapphic book, protagonist with mobility aid ( one of the stories has it) , gender identity ( there are couple of stories on this) , some of the authors have written other books ( son this meets another book by an author you have already read) .
