This book was not as good as the TV show; I know, it's crazy to say that, but it's true. The TV show = four stars=loved it= watched the entire first season in two days. The book=one star=it sucked=did not finish

A story about magic with a gritty twist: aka everyone is deeply unhappy and trying to chase it away with drugs, sex, alcohol or magical conspiracy. While it was an interesting story, I found Grossman's habit of using obscure 16th century words when perfectly sufficient 21st century ones were available frustrating and distracting. I got through about ~75% of it on my own enthusiasm, and then had to push to read the end.
I found Quentin to be deeply unlikeable, and I'm not certain if that was by design or not.

It was not capturing my interest at all. Maybe in the future I’ll have a different headspace and enjoy it more.
relentlessly depressing. I wanted to read the book before watching the TV show, but finishing this book will probably end with me committing suicide about the uselessness of life. also, up to half way though there was no plot. none. it's just a bunch of random unrelated crap. seems like the kind of book that stereotypical English professors love to make their class read then wonder why they hate it.
