I'm disappointed in myself by just now diving into the Vampire books by Anne Rice. I've watched the movies and I have to say that the books are way better.
This book wasn’t great, but it did what I needed it to do which was to add more depth to the characters. I have watched the book adapted movie many times since it was released and wanted a deeper understanding of the characters and story.
Oh my god, Louis. Shut up.
This is one of those books that I shelved when I first joined Goodreads. I originally rated it four stars (mostly out of nostalgia, I think) despite remembering being pretty 'meh' about it. I thought nostalgia might carry me through the reread.
Nope. Still meh.
Don't get me wrong, Anne Rice writes beautifully and it's nothing if not an interesting story. But goddamn it, Louis. Shut the fuck up.
He just goes on and on and on and on about how eeeeeviiiil he must be and how tortured his soul is and for fucks sake, I listened to HIM in high school and even back then I still wished Louis would just walk out into the sun and get it over with.
Advice if you're a new Rice reader: No matter what you thought of this book - I don't care if you'd rate it negative stars if you could - if you read the whole thing, start reading the Vampire Lestat. If you don't fall in love with Lestat, you have my personal blessing on ditching the series.

I loved it when I read it in my 20's - not so much now.
Louis is a verbose, drama queen vampire whose search for meaning in his existence is kind of endearing, but is accompanied by lots of breast-beatingly melodramatic speeches.

Vampire series with vampires that are not friendly and will eat you in a heartbeat. They don't have extra special powers and they don't sparkle.

This book was an absolute vibe. It’s a reread for me, but since I’d forgotten most of it, it felt like stepping into it for the first time again. One thing that hasn’t changed? My love for these characters. They’re iconic, timeless, and just a little extra in all the best ways.
The settings, characters, and plot are all dripping with quality. Standout moments for me? The eerie yet flamboyant Vampire Theater (that place was giving full camp), Louis’s angst and moral dilemmas, and, of course, Claudia’s brilliance. Those are what will stick with me when I think back on this book.
One thing I loved was how Rice approached the angst and romance. The blood and killing those intense moments of intimacy become their own kind of sensuality, a connection deeper than your typical smut. It’s like romance, but elevated and stripped down to raw desire.
I do have to mention the writing style, though it’s lush, almost too lush at times. For me, that made it a bit harder to stay fully engaged. I’d get so caught up in the poetic descriptions that I’d miss key details and have to backtrack. But I think that’s more of a me problem than a fault though.
