The premise was interesting, however I was just bored/avoiding reading it for some reason. I've come to the conclusion that I'm simply not an Anne Rice fan, I've now read/attempted to read two of her most critically acclaimed books and they just don't do it for me.

Lots to analyze with these complex characters. Nothing very deep. Themes of immortality and humanity (what fosters humanity when one of its core drivers, death, is absent?) very highly discussed. Worth a read.

Rereading and disovering new things. Some aspects of this is still brilliant, but some others are really true to Anne Rice levels of equal parts cringe and creepy.

“I understand you only too well… That passivity in me has been the core of it all, the real evil. That weakness, that refusal to compromise a fractured and stupid morality, that awful pride!

The perfect read for Halloween! So beautifully written Rice really makes the vampires real, you end up understanding them which is disturbing but fascinating. And so sensual at times, very intense.
I think it could have been just as effective shorter though which is why I deducted it a star.

I’d don’t mind having added this to my read shelf, and I do think it adds a dimension to the overall cannon. There were some poignant moments for sure. I think I would have liked less philosophical musing in favor of plot, and any time a child was the object of something sensual I couldn’t get past feeling ick. (Clarification as a content warning: there isn’t anything overtly sexual involving children, but the longing for and preying on life/innocence is a recurring theme and lines between parental love and lover/companion love is blurred as an emotion often.)

Cult Classic for a reason

For me it’s from part III forward where it really starts picking up and getting good.
