If you've seen the movie, you don't need to read the book. It's exactly the same, and somehow feels way harder to get through. (I love the movie)
2.5 stars rounded up to 3.
Interview with the Vampire has a slow, contemplative plot. I found my mind wandering quite a bit while reading this. I haven’t seen the movie. Maybe seeing this on screen could be worthwhile.
The parts with Lestat were entertaining. Lestat is sort of a mentor to Louis at first but becomes his worst enemy.
The settings were well done in New Orleans then Europe and Paris.
When I compare book this to Dracula, which I’m currently reading, Interview with the Vampire isn’t nearly as engaging.
I will continue the series. I’m chalking this book up as a first in series that has potential to be great.

Read this originally in middle school. Turns out it doesn't...really hold up. Still, a fundamental text of the modern vampire genre, and worth reading if you haven't. It's a decent story, and the language is beautiful, it's just that now there's so much choice in the genre it really doesn't hold the place in my heart it used to.
The story was interesting but the goddamn quotation marks over everything was too much.

This book runs entirely on atmospherics. There is a solid plot and well-written characters. But it's the whole Gothic, philosophy-heavy romance that gets you.
I mostly started this book because I wanted to read it before watching the eponymous movie and now the new TV series. Of course, it helped that it was queer-coded. Although not very explicit, the relations in the novel are very queer. It was a little disturbing to read about an adult vampire in a child's body wanting more with her life, but I think that was just part of the Gothic gruesomeness. Who doesn't love a creepy child/doll?
For some reason, I had missed that this is part of a chronicle that includes about 13 books and a lot of adaptations. Although I enjoyed this book, I don't think I'm going to continue with the series. I am curious to watch the movie and the series though. The series especially has been getting rave reviews recently!
