I wish Louis would just chill

I had to force myself a little through this one. First of all, I've seen the movie, so I new all the plot twists. Second of all, it's more gloomy and pensive than the vampire books I read for fun. Interview seemed to go in the direction of more Dostoevsky than fluff, kickass Charlaine Harris or Jeaniene Frost. So if you want to go all serious about vampire business, analyze moral dilemmas and get a mouthful of inner monologue - go for it. Otherwise, jut watch movie, it's more fun.

I liked this a lot, but the book does feel very dated. It doesn't help that it inspired a new wave of vampire stuff because if I didn't see a lot of this already, I would have been really into the lack of mysticism with the vampires. That said, this is really more like the sad adventures of Mr. Immortal.

Prose was excellent although a lot of moments feel like they take forever to get through. Lestat is great because I fell for Lestat. All Lestat really does is just neg Louie into staying, and it only works because Lestat does a great job pretending to be mystical and shit when really he isn't (a general motif with all these vampires). Everything about Lestat is just fun.

Book loses a bit of steam in the middle, but I was shocked to find out the ending of the movie was different. Lots of mixed feelings about which I prefer, which I think should stand as testament to how good both version's endings are. This was a great, fun ride that I will never continue because I know these books get wonky.

What an interesting set of characters. Anne rice has such a way with words, you physically feel it in your chest, excited about what’s to come. Lestat is toxic, yes, but in a pathetically loveable way. I’m always invested in what he does next. I love Louis character and his revulsion of himself. How he continuously tries to cling onto his humanity but falls back into his vampirism. He has this internal struggle and hatred within himself that he will never see immortality as a gift, but a curse instead. He cursed Claudia, and feels all her suffering is because of him. Claudia was stuck as this child for Lestats amusement. I find it hard to believe that Lestat felt anything for Claudia, even in her death. To me, it was more his fear of losing Louis after letting Claudia die. He knew this would hurt Louis. I loved Louis revenge, although, I didn’t really care for Claudia as much as Louis did, it really showed the reader the extent of his love for her. She really was his daughter. Now, Armand really fucked up letting Claudia die, because that spark he saw in Louis died with her. Louis and Armand, a questionable couple, after Claudia warned Louis that Armand wanted her dead. I’m glad Louis didn’t give Armand what he wanted in the end. Louis is alone. Lestat is distraught. Claudia is dead. Our interviewer didn’t understand a damn thing Louis was trying to tell in his story. He only saw the pros and what immortality can give him, rather then the madness and despair that comes with vampirism. The loneliness…I’m curious to what the next book will bring.

every main character in this book being unapologetic pedophiles is crazy LMFAO also the causal racism, slavery, killing of Black ppl was…eh. I knew what I was getting into when she made Louis a slave owner tho so *shrugs* but I had a little fun reading it and will likely continue with the series! Prefer the show ten fold though, there will never be another Louis like Jacob Anderson’s LOML and after reading the book, the show felt so much more alive and like Louis getting payback on how shit ppl have treated him. It just made more sense 😭

The casual mentions of slave, slavery and racism from Louis were too much for me

so reading this after watching the tv show was like reading an incredible fanfiction and finding out the canon is worse. louis as a slaveholder was unpleasant to say the least. anne rice has this incredible way of always telling and never showing that makes her work so tedious.
