i took a star off because anne rice writing louis as a sl*ve owner in the book just doesn’t sit right with my spirit. i’m so glad the show made louis Black and doesn’t go with that storyline like thank GOD.
i really liked it otherwise (though, i could do without some of the fluff and intense descriptive language at times, but i get that it’s a gothic fantasy book so it kinda comes with the territory). i can’t wait to read lestat’s perspective and then see what they do with it in the next season of the show !!

An atmospheric, very well-written gothic horror which starts strong and does manage to stick the landing. Introspective on the human condition and the life of a vampire in this world.
However, the writing used in scenes surrounding Claudia and the two young boys she brings for Lestat was was perverse and disturbing; I just about DNFd and there is no excuse in that it's "the atmosphere of the book" and "the romanticisation vampires give to every facet of their existence" which justifies how those scenes were written. If this part was written differently I would probably be rating this book higher, but I can't overstate how uncomfortable I was.
I did find the second half of the book much more interesting and poetic as we reach the crux of Louis' character arc.

I got this as a christmas gift from my fiancée because I have been very much into vampires lately and consuming all I can in hope to inspire my own stories with vampiric characters. What I did not expect was how beautifully this book would be written and how incredibly inspiring it would be to be absorbed into this world. The way Louis tells his story is so captivating, sensual, dark and tragically beautiful that I was just in awe for the majority of the book. It felt so raw and real and painful and sad. My boy is sad the entire book but that does not hinder how he tells this story in the slightest. It was a roller coaster and I am so hype to read Lestat's story next! I'm still sitting here 2 days later after finishing like damn, that was insane.
lestat de lioncourt u will always be famous!
this is suuuuch an interesting take on the figure of the vampire and i love it. these are vampires who (mostly?) do not revel in their immortality, all of them are keenly aware of the threat of eternal loneliness that hangs over them.
…… however cohabiting peacefully w other immortals proves to be tricky! because they are all divas and freaks.
