Reading Invisible Women gave me a lot of mixed emotions. On the one hand, I think this is an important book for any woman to read. No matter your situation, or how good you think you have it, it makes you realize that there is still a long way to go when it comes to gender equality.

At the same time, the lack of data that Perez highlights is worrisome in itself—it’s almost a message on its own. The book is full of statistics and examples, which makes it feel close to a research paper, but it is also very clear that the author’s opinions and perspective are strongly present.

One aspect I struggled with was the use of extreme worst-case scenarios to demonstrate certain points. For example, the story of a woman unable to operate an iPhone with one hand during a tear gas attack struck me as overly dramatized. In some ways, this kind of exaggeration risks undermining the seriousness of the issue, which is ironic given that the whole point is how often women’s realities are not taken seriously.

Still, many parts of the book were incredibly eye-opening. I was fascinated by how something like childcare policy can make such a big difference, or how the choice of tools and equipment affects who can do certain jobs. I was shocked by how little the female body is considered in medical testing—it’s hard to believe how recent and widespread that problem still is.

Ultimately, I find myself conflicted. I wish these issues were more commonly known and, even more importantly, actually addressed. At the same time, part of me wishes I hadn’t read it—because it left me both realy sad and angry. Ignorance might have been bliss, but once you know, you know.

what a rage inducing book

This is really good! I would love some more updated information but it was still so enlightening and there was some stuff that I hadn't even thought of.

A really good and insightful book that everyone should read!
