I’m rereading this series from my childhood for a trip down nostalgia lane, and boy do I still love this book. Cute, fun and adventurous with a quirky set of characters and a fun setting.

Maybe 3.5. A lot of nostalgia for this book although I really didn’t remember much of what happened. It’s a lot darker than i remembered.

After seeing the pretty lame movie, I figured I should see if there was more to the story and there was. A quick easy read that might leave a 9 year old wanting more, not so much for me though.

In the classic tradition of overly long series everywhere, Book 1 is not so much a complete tale as it is a prologue for the fun stuff that'll come in later books. It wasn't outright bad, but there was absolutely nothing that intrigued me enough to want to continue onward. In particular, the book really, really would've been better served had not 80% of it taken place in St. Aggie's prison/ orphanage, a setting intended to be mysterious that came across as dull and unoriginal. When it comes to modern fantasy animals, I think Erin Hunter has the edge. (student book club, will not be using again)

It's good, but this is the perfect book for when I was 10. It's written in a manner perfect for kids. Everything is overexplained and the dialogues seem rather... off? I do really love the owl facts that are hidden in the story
