Thank you to NetGalley and Grand Central Publishing for providing a copy of the book for me to read in exchange for my honest opinion.

Synopsis: It’s the eve of 1953, and Aloysius Archer is in Los Angeles to ring in the New Year with an old friend, aspiring actress Liberty Callahan, when their evening is interrupted by an acquaintance of Callahan’s: Eleanor Lamb, a screenwriter in dire straits. After a series of increasingly chilling events—mysterious phone calls, the same blue car loitering outside her house, and a bloody knife left in her sink—Eleanor fears that her life is in danger, and she wants to hire Archer to look into the matter. Archer suspects that Eleanor knows more than she’s saying, but before he can officially take on her case, a dead body turns up inside of Eleanor’s home . . . and Eleanor herself disappears. Missing client or not, Archer is dead set on finding both the murderer and Eleanor.

My Thoughts: The chapters are short making for a fast paced book. The POV is from Archer. The author did a fantastic job of describing Hollywood in the 1950s, made me feel like I was right there with Archer. This is part of the Archer series and Baldacci has done an amazing job of creating this character and you can pick up any book in the series to read as a stand alone and be able to follow the character with no issues, the characters were well-thought out and planned very well. The author is able to keep the plot running throughout the story, keeping you engaged and page turning. I enjoyed reading this book.

This will be a short one because I can’t read another crime story with a lone-wolf detective that has vet-trauma and is emotionally unavailable. THIS IS ALWAYS THE SAME CHARACTER. Also, the plot did not catch me at all. I couldn’t care less.

This book really reminded me how psyched I am for Perry Mason season 2 - it really gave those same gritty PI vibes! Archer is a great character and I really liked his wit, honesty and realistic sense of morality. He’s fiercely loyal and has a great support system which I enjoy in a main character. While I haven’t read the first two books in this series, I don’t think you need to in order to dive into this one. Although, I’ll definitely be grabbing them now because I am not done with Archer!

Dream Town by David Baldacci is as usual easy to read due to the wonderful way the author has with the language. Although I found it to be not as good as the two first books in this series it still captivates and has lots of fun chapters. I hope Baldacci will continue this series since I have alway been a fan of the hardboiled and noir detective genres and we need more books set in a time that is not the present.

Read this in a sporadic manner for the first few chapters and my was it hard to keep track of all the characters! There’s lots of moving pieces and the entire story is quite convoluted, with several unexpected twists and turns. I get why some readers might be turned off, but it was satisfying to see Archer’s breakthrough! My heart broke for him at the end though… Despite the slow pacing of the Archer series, I’m excited to see what the next novel holds since this book represents his turning point as a full-fledged, independent gumshoe!

Another enjoyable blockbuster
Strong reminder of the great old black and white 1960s detective films
I could imagine Robert Mitchum or Burt Lancaster in the lead role
Looking forward to his next sequel
