This is one of those instances where the movie 'Eyes Wide Shut' is vastly superior to the novel/novella. I'd like to think that Arthur Schnitzler and Stanely Kubrick collaborated unconsciously though to take it to that next level. The tension at the masked party is still one of my favorite scenes of all-time and is captured just as effectively here, albeit less viscerally through prose writing. Read this if you're a fan of the movie, but in my opinion, skip this and watch the movie instead if you're haven't seen it already as it's a very immersive and sensual experience by a master director--qualities that aren't so potent here.
