interested in 450+ pages of men complaining about their lives and being complete assholes and the women being so poorly written and one dimensional? then i've got the book for you!

do not read if you hate men or listening to what men have to say! this is an entire book of just that!

biggest let down of a highly-anticipated release in a loooong time. a pathetic excuse of a book.

This was the first sally Rooney I’ve attempted and the writing style is not for me in the slightest. I wasn’t super bothered by the lack of quotations, I was more so bothered by the short, un-detailed sentences. Part of me wanted to power through but I haven’t read in a week because I dread picking it up /:

Incredible to know such a story exists and get to read it. Maybe I’m Getting OlderTM but this novel hit the hardest of all the Rooneys for me. The characters’ experiences with illness and how it rots more than their bodies moved me so much, as did the ruptures of siblinghood trying to last into adulthood. I also really liked how the characters emotions and thoughts were written so barely and believably. I will need to reread at some point and gather my thoughts not at midnight, but this was just a propulsive masterpiece. It’s made me think about living in a whole new way.

I read this as part of a book club. Since Normal People, I have struggled to like any other books by Sally Rooney. I’m not a fan of her writing style. I don’t like how the dialogue is not written in speech marks. I also don’t like how where if multiple people are speaking, it’s all in one big paragraph. It’s so confusing and you have to reread it a few times to figure out who is actually talking. I honestly skimmed through a lot of this and personally, would not recommend.

4.5 stars. Complicated adult relationships, both sibling relationships and romantic ones. Loved parts of it but it was slow at points keeping it from being 5 stars. Simple language that’s not easy to write.

sally never disappoints me. although i prefer when she writes female characters this book was amazing. i loved the way the tempo of the book changed whenever peter was alone. i loved that none of the characters were always right and that they were so unreliable. i loved the ending, so emotional literally everything that i could’ve asked for. it suited the characters so well i don’t have any notes. i loved the style. she just writes people so well. thanks to her i could reflect on relationships that i have in real life and maybe better myself.
