Elizabeth Wein does not miss. Love the murder mystery aspect, and the characters were well-written. The moments of tension interspersed with the flying race was a great structural choice.

This book had all the necessary ingredients for a good story. However, it failed at execution and it just didn't work for me. There was little to no depth to the characters. At the end of the book I still didn't feel like I really knew any of the characters. The story stood more in the excitement of "who's the danger, is there in fact a danger...". However, while there was enough tension to finish the book it wasn't really all that exciting. I found myself bored more often than not. The story was too repetitive. Each leg something questionable would happen.... Is it a real threat, is it her imagination..... Repeat on the next leg and the next.....

A lot of flying and plane talk, not enough depth to the mystery. So, while readable the story needs depth- either in characters or drama. As it stands it's merely mediocre.

Okay. I'm not saying it wasn't good, but it was a huge let down after the Code Name Verity series. If I hadn't had those high expectations I wouldn't have a single complaint. It wasn't nearly as thrilling and ended with too many things all tidied up. Can't I just read Code Name Verity for the first time again? Please?

This was actually a very interesting Historical Fiction novel! I enjoyed the different perspective of an international European air race right on the brink of WWII. I loved all the characters, and I especially loved Stella. Thought the mystery was intriguing and twisty enough to keep me guessing nearly the whole time. Altogether a good read.
