“You always ask me about three good things that happened during my day, but baby, everything good in my life is you. The three best things to have happened in my entire life were meeting you, marrying you… and falling in love with you.”

My experience with Catharine Maura was ruined by The Wrong Bride. I could not even finish that book because I do not tolerate OM/OW drama if they are not dead and if there was a relationship in the past with one of the main characters. I can tolerate some times if it is done well and only IF there not lingering feeling. I wanted to give another book a chance but almost all the popular one are having that trope one way or another and I really wanted to read Windsors books.

It is not even the exiSting of OW/OM drama that bugs me, it is the fact throughout this book, we hear about them constantly. They feel like a third partner in the relationship.

Catharina’s style of writing is to the point and she keeps it interesting. When I read this book, I noticed something that I didn’t pick while reading The Wrong Bride (maybe because I DNFed at 21%) is that she writes about all those powerful people with what it turned out to be cheesy dialogue and childish personalities.

Now what I liked about this books: relatively short book, short chapters, interesting storyline, lovely family dynamics, jealousy scenes. And spoiler alert, a good grovelling that writer does not just pass through. He actually suffers and breaks and bend the knee to beg. It was satisfying.

Marriage of convenience
Angst
Bestfriend's brother
Miscommunication trope
Cinderella trope
Third-act-breakup

The hero is your average billionaire with the usual possessive alphahole streak. But, he really loves his mom and also cares so very much about his baby brother. But he's emotionally dead and has major trust issues, so he's got a sky high wall around his heart and everything else so he's basically a walking stone who can't read into people's feelings.

The heroine....well, she loves her mom too. And she loves her so much that she'll literally do anything for her. And that's something I truly respect her for. But when it comes to the hero— well, I wouldn't call her a doormat (not when ppl like Tate from Ugly Love already exist), but she'd take any shit that the guy throws at her with a smiling face. But uk, it was more in a way that showed her resilience. Each time she kept her mouth shut about a situation, it was because she didn't want to cross her limits and barge into his territory and demand more than what she bargained for (this was a marriage of convenience, after all).

Where I disliked her tho was during the third act breakup. It's like she suddenly grew a spine out of nowhere and the character development from that point onwards was exponential to an unbelievable degree.

The hero wasn't much better either. But I liked him better during the third-act-break..

It's like when I liked her, I hated him, and when I grew to like him I started hating her. But then again I guess that's what third-act-break trope is all about. No wonder it's not my favorite.

And in addition to all this. The story had too many stuff going on. It was just a mess. I'd really love to say that I saw all those "twists" as mind-blowing. But it just felt like every single plot out there was implemented, and it just got too much and tiring and predictable. And the book itself was also giving such Wattpad vibes the entire time (not in a good way). The characters and dialogues were dramatic and unreal. It had a potential to get awesome when the heroine tried to take down the bad guys, but that was never shown in detail— so the baddie vibe wasn't entirely giving either.

Despite all that. I'd like to just mention that I did manage to read the book till the end. And that's because it actually has every single one of the trope that I mentioned above. And I was craving a book with all those tropes, except the third-act-break (coz I'm not a fan, and I also didn't know this book involved it). So for anyone specifically looking for this particular combo of tropes, you could give this a try. It'll at least satisfy your cravings.
