Has this become my favorite book in the series so far? Has Kresley Cole found her stride and formula for this series and giving me heart palpitations by doing so?! If you asked any of those questions in the span of coming to this review, the answer is a resounding YES! Guys, I can’t describe to you how much I loved and adored this book. Bowen and Mariketa are what I yearn for in an enemies to lovers romance—sexual tension, bickering, and constant back and forth that makes anyone get topsy turvy. Wicked Deeds On A Winters Night did the damn thing.

We pick up right where the Kaderin’s story left off, Bowen trapped in…well—hell, and Mariketa trapped in a dark cave with several contestants of the Hie. Its not looking good for either the powerful witch or the grumpy werewolf. However, when Bowen gets freed in order to find those he trapped in the middle of the Jungle, he quickly finds himself drawn to the one person he hates the most in the world as if she was his true mate—a witch.

I loved watching Bowen grapple with his past love all the while slowly falling for Mariketa in the present. It was such a unique and fresh take on the entire “fated mates” mantra. We got to see him take his time and genuinely get to know Mariketa on a level that wasn’t just instinctual. And I’m sorry (I’m not) but Mariketa is probably one of the best—if not THE best—heroines so far in the series. Strong, determined, and desperate to fill in the shoes she was destined to wear from birth, this girl was the epitome of badass even when she could barely contain her magic.

I loved watching Bowen grovel for forgiveness with her and actually work for not only her love but also her trust and friendship. I am such a sucker for a good grovel moment and a hero that isn’t ashamed to do whatever it takes to gain that forgiveness, and with these two—I got that and then some.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one from the first page to the last page. I can totally see myself reading this book over and over again. If you are in the mood for a hot, tension filled enemies to lovers with a 10/10 grovel—this is your book! I swear on my bookshelves you won’t regret this book.

—A CRANKY OLD SELFISH LYKAE BEING GRANTED THINGS HE DOESN’T DESERVE.

SUMMARY :

Bowen MacRieve, a tough Highland werewolf, and Mariketa, a kickass young witch, are sworn enemies with a serious grudge. But guess what? Sparks fly when they get up close and personal. Bowen, once a stone-cold warrior, can't resist Mariketa's hot touch. As they face dark forces together, their fiery connection grows. The big question: Will Mari give in to Bowen's demands for body and soul, or is she ready to risk it all for her fierce protector?

CHARACTERS :

I loved how Mariketa stayed strong despite life's letdowns, always holding onto hope. Joining the Hie to unveil her true potential, she aimed to prove she's worth the wait. What puzzled me was why she assumed the worst about her parents. Being a witch, she could've unraveled the truth sooner, especially with good memories with them. It seemed like she could've figured it out independently if she tried hard enough.

Bowen turned out to be one of the worst characters ever – a selfish, old, and cranky Lykae. I didn't see that coming, considering I felt sorry for him in the last book as he fought tooth and nail for his mate. Now, it's clear it wasn't about her, but his own loneliness. Which he further proves by going from hating Mariketa to wanting her in his bed, only because he believes she might be his mate's reincarnation. Honestly, he just disgusts me.

ROMANCE :

Bowen's just after Mariketa for his own selfish desires, thinking she can fulfill his needs better than his dead mate. And if that doesn't gross you out, he tries to turn her into a breeding machine right out of the gate. Talk about messed up! Bowen's as selfish as they come, trying to use Mariketa for pleasure and kids, not giving a damn about her feelings. I couldn’t get why Mariketa was into him – but I got my answer eventually. So I guess she's stuck with him now, even though she deserves so much better. Also Bowen didn’t deserve the multiple chances she gave him, I mean the least he could do was tell Mariketa why he loved her.

Cool addition to the IAD world, but not as good as the previous book or the following book. Still, Mari was a wonderful character (Kresley Cole writes great arsekicking ladies!) and once Bowen got over his moaning about his lost love, he was great too.

Bowen pissed me off for half of the book! >.<
I get that he missed his died mate but HELLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! You have Mari right there, in FRONT of your face!! Dick. lol

But he gets better and starts to really love Mari and Mari loves him even through she was scared of him at first.

But overall, it was a good book. ^_6

I'm slowly rereading this series with Ruby @ Bookishly Ruby. You should check her review here. I was dreading this book since I was dreading the whole trope of hero loosing his mate and comparing heroine to the old one. What can I say? I've been annoyed by enough of characters like that.

There's not enough likeable witch characters, so Mariketa was fun to read about. She's a "Chosen One" but instead of running away from it she went as far as to hide behind a magikal glamor to make sure nothing and no-one prevents her from her destiny. I really felt for her, for feeling like she's always part of B- team.

Bowen MacRieve of the Lykae clan had his moments but he could be annoying at times about his feelings for Mariketa. He refused to believe anything but that his feelings were because of a spell. Bowen's not perfect by all means: he had feelings for Mariketa but would still go back in time to save Mariah but the end of the book redeems him in my eyes.

Wicked Deeds on a Winter's Night is my favorite book so far. It seems like every book is better than the last one. I was so surprised how much I liked it that I almost gave it full five stars. I'm glad Kresley Cole managed to make me enjoy certain tropes more than usually, like chosen one and hero finding a new love.

3.5. I was quite impressed by this actually. This is definitely a true enemies to lovers, the lore was pretty great (complex at times), and the writing was engaging. Better yet, I thought Mari’s character was funny!

I think my only mild annoyance is the slight love triangle and Bowe’s annoying accent that reflects in his dialogue. Otherwise, I think there’s a lot of qualities here that lovers of romance esp paranormal will like here!

The heroine was pretty badass, but I was annoyed at how fast she forgave the hero for the "calling her by his ex's name" thing...that was just too much for me, and definitely deserved more grovel than we were given. The hero's wishy-washiness was really annoying at times.

The thing that bugs me about this series is that the glossary at the beginning is SO HUGE that it feels like I'm studying for a test. Obviously we can glean most of the relevant info while reading the story itself, but it's just kinda intimidating to read that huge thing right at the beginning. It also bugs me that the stories always seems to start at some random point, where the hero and heroine has already met before. Anywho, enjoyed the book overall. Certainly kept my attention throughout.

)
Bref, encore une fois je succombe aux charmes des Écossais, des sorcières et des habitants du Lore
PS : l'accent écossais ... <3
PS2: JE VEUX LE COTTAGE EN ÉCOSSE <3

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ahhhh Bowen and Mariketa ... As I read the other books before, I had already seen them together happy and in a relationship but I didn't know how they got there ... And I was not disappointed =D
They are both complex characters, with their responsibilities (Mariketa and her prophecy), their faults (when Bowen leaves them in the cave ...) and their prejudices (Bowen and his hatred of witches) but I loved them see interact and evolve <3
And the plot was super twisted !! Full of reversals, misunderstandings (I must admit that I didn't see coming the thing with
Spoilerthe spell and the false soulmate
) and surprises >< (and these last pages when
SpoilerMari is stuck in the mirrors ... Bo was so cute ><
)
In short, once again I succumb to the charms of Scots, witches and inhabitants of the Lore
PS: the Scottish accent ... <3
PS2 : I want the cottage in Scotland !!
