Jim Butcher

Just fun!

Harry Dresden’s world turns upside down

The war begins and war is hell. I think that Butcher does a great job in illustrating the horror that a supernatural war would be. He doesn’t glamorize it. He includes the pain, loss, and trauma. Things happen that made me exclaim in expletives. I’m not going to go into detail but things happen that left me shocked. I’m now very curious as to where Jim Butcher and Harry Dresden go next.

This is better than the preceding entry. It's sheer chaos, but it's warranted chaos. And the resolution is certainly better than the mindwipe I worried might be used to deal with the fallout. I'll be interested to see where things go from here.

The question is, does the quality of this book make up for the quality of the last? Much of the issue with the last book clearly stems from the fact that it's a lead-in to this book, so there is some retroactive improvement to things knowing why certain things happened. However, there were just too many decisions in #16 that did not feel right, even knowing what they were leading to, so my own answer is, "No."

Still, I'm back to looking forward to this series with a great deal of enthusiasm. Really, for a series as long as this one is, it's not such a bad thing that there was a miss in the mix.

I'M FINALLY CAUGHT UP WITH THE DRESDEN FILES!

This was... excellent. All this build-up for an epic battle, and that's exactly what we got. There were some absolutely devastating moments and enough action to pack all 400 pages. I started this and stayed up way too long reading it, and thought of not much else at work the next day.

I think the story is all the more impressive when considering how horrifically disappointed I was by the final battle in [b:Scourged|16280691|Scourged (The Iron Druid Chronicles, #9)|Kevin Hearne|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1499962238l/16280691._SX50_.jpg|22382336]. Reading this directly after put the highlights into full focus.

Apparently I now join the congregation of those who wait for Butcher to spit out his next few books, but I don't believe we were left on a frustrating cliffhanger. There were many loose ends tied up, with promise for a few good storylines yet to come.

February 2021: So far this really is making up for Peace Talks. Let's hope.

So That Was a Fucking Lie | Know Your Meme

March 2021: First half is great, second half is an absolute train wreck riddled with cliches and a lacklustre ending.

Side note: Okay Jim, that character death was NOT necessary thank you very much. It added nothing to the story and was poorly done. What has this series become.

Hell's Bells, this has got to be one of my favorite of the series, finished it in one sitting and the first book ever that I immediately want to re-read. Higher stakes than before and no one has come out of it unscathed. Emotionally nerve-racking, Mr Butcher did really pour his all in this one. I'll concur that this book and the previous one should be treated as one tale of giant repercussions, more world bending than what changes proved to be, the universe of Dresden will never be the same again. Be prepared to laugh with dreseen and shed tears with him. Many a mysteries have finally unfolded and few of the big league players finally made an appearance. Now the toughest part ahead....waiting for the sequel. This book just cemented what I've already known that Dresen files will forever be my all time favourite.

Dresden Files drinking game: every time the name "Butters" is followed by "the little guy" in the next sentence, have a sip. Would probably make the story much more enjoyable.

This could have been much nicer if the story was edited better and fitted in one book instead of two. And if it had a more consistent tone. The impact of all those deaths is lost immediately when half a page later we're back to the silly jokes. When the stakes are supposedly that high, they just ruin it.

Essentially Part Two on Peace Talks and it was pretty much all an epic battle finale.

I enjoyed it immensely. Especially the Guns and Roses sequence.

Having devoured it so quickly and given it was so action packed, I am tempted to read it again as I am sure I missed some bits / nuance.

The ending / epilogue was a bit anticlimatic but given what preceded it, not very surprising.

Hopefully No.18 will be out soon.
