13 hours of one single battle!

After having read Peace Talks (the previous book), I've spent quite a bit of time avoiding reading this. I'm not sure if it was because I was afraid that Battle Ground would end up disappointing, or, because after finishing it, I'd be left with no more Harry Dresden for quite a while. Well I can definitely say that it did not disappoint.

This book not only managed to bring me back to what I loved about the Dresden Files all these years, but also to surpass all of my expectations. I cried multiple times during this book, and even at the end of it I'm left speechless.

What a ride. Harry is growing and this is not the simple wizard we started with way back in the early tales. Nor are we graced with the same cast of characters at the end of this one, as they too are cycling in and out of the mortal world and Harry Dresden’s as well. Fighting a titan is all just part of his day job, but it’s the extracurricular gig as warden of Demonreach that will be the spicy factor moving forward in my estimation. Another great offering from Butcher.

Basically non stop action. Still managed to have its twist and emotional moments. I look forward to seeing where the story goes next.

3 stars might be generous, considering how glazed over my eyes were for most of this book.

If you like big, booming battles with lots of firepower, explosions, magical energy, and destruction of a major metropolis, you'll probably love Battle Ground. As for me, a battle that takes up about 80% of a book does not make for great reading.

I read the Dresden books for the characters, the escapades, the life-or-death struggles... but not for one long never-ending action sequence. Sorry, but chapter after chapter after chapter of Harry throwing his power around, being outmatched, and then somehow soldiering on just doesn't make for great reading.

There are some significant developments, and hey, 17 books in, of course I'll keep going with the series. This just was not a stellar read for me.

Butcher is good at writing his brand of action and snark, and this book is almost wall-to-wall action and snark. Kudos for paying off the previous book, which really did feel mostly like a prologue to this one.

I love me some Jim Butcher. However, the anticipation was killing me. I understand battle doesn't happen like a snap, but man oh man I was dying reading that book. Then it still left so many things unanswered. One particular death crushed me. Butcher has a way of keeping us hooked.

If you are a fan of the Dresden files, this book speaks for itself. If you are new to the series...stop now and go back to the beginning. You will want to find 'Storm Front.' We've come to far and you need to be filled in.
