Hard to do a big battle from a single perspective. Lacked the scope of other big finale battles.
Felt rushed. No real surprises. Entertaining for sure, but not ground breaking. More like sweeping up the floor after a big to-do.
Dresden Files continues and this is a direct sequel to Peace Talks. The story is about the major battle sequence, which takes up majority of the book. While I love Jim Butcher's writing and James Marster's narration, a giant battle sequence that lasts 100 of pages gets a bit tiring. There were many moments that felt unnecessary for the battle but felt put in to make it feel "cool". There were very surprising moments that were very hard hitting, but then seemed to be washed away and forgotten. There is very little story and only conflict and action.
What dread things are to come? Harry finishes his two part jaunt to ward off evil at enormous cost. Ebook contained the short Christmas Eve.
This stupid series. We're 16 books in, you're going to read it. We are all sunk-cost-fallacied into Harry's terrible terrible decisions. Some people think Butcher's trying for an unreliable narrator. It's just like a rom-com. Communication, guys. Just sit down for coffee and explain your shit, Harry, you dangerous war criminal.
The older I get and the more of these I read, the more they read as author insert fiction (I'm sure there's a snappy name for that) BUT, on the other hand, why become an author if not to put your personal fantasies to paper?
Not terribly well or poorly written, but right down the middle and enough to be a ride (predictably fridging aside...sighhhhhhhhhh), and I'm invested enough 17 books in to continue paying for tickets.

Absolutely amazing, although I'd expect nothing less from Jim Butcher. His books are among the few of which I read every single word. His characters are spellbinding, their relationships genuine, and their challenges the things of legend.
The action in this book is non-stop, and yet there is plenty of character development and vivid description to go along with it. Without giving anything away, I can honestly say that I was at turns rivetted, shocked, saddened, and satisfied.
This series is truly fascinating! And as a geek, I truly appreciate the so-called pop culture references.

This book almost broke my heart to pieces and didn't even put them back. I am so upset with Butcher that you have no idea, but I still have to read further....
