I love this series. I can't quite bring myself to accept one of the choices the author made in this one though. I won't quit reading them, but my enjoyment will be forever tarnished. Sorry Jim, I think you messed up here. Unless there is some get out of Valhalla free card getting played sometime soon...
Edited to add: I still haven't had the heart, or desire even, to pick this up for a re-read. I think the only hope the series may have is if this is all some dream/vision of a possible future that didn't really happen. "Mirror, mirror"....?
Edited October 2021 - went through the whole series again, and made it through this a second time. I actually was able to enjoy it a little more this time, knowing what was coming. Still not my favorite.

Epic and the Christmas Eve short story at the end brought me to tears.
I normally enjoy Dresden books but this one was a bit of a slog to get through. Peace Talks dragged out so I just knew the conflict would be moved along in this book, and I was only half right. There is action scene after action scene after action scene after action scene leading up to the final big battle which takes three or four chapters. There's precious little exposition of the overarching plot and even though there are a lot of showstopper moments, it's mostly flash and little substance.
MAJOR SPOILERS under the tag.
Murphy does, though, and of course now that she and Harry are an item she has to get killed to further the development of his character. She gets killed in the dumbest way possible (shot by a frightened Rawlins after she helps Harry take down a troll). But since she was a warrior, she gets to go to Valhalla. However, she can't come back as a Viking ghost mercenary until everyone on Earth who remembers her dies, which makes it seem like she won't be coming back. I've felt like her death was coming for the past two or three books--she hasn't been the same since Harry died. I hoped she would become a Knight of the Cross because every time Harry is using his Sight, he sees her as an angelic figure. Having her die using one of the legendary swords would have been much more fitting. It also would have been a full circle moment since she broke Fidelacchius. But this is what we got. I was honestly never a fan of Murphy (I tried but she was always slightly annoying to me), but she's been featured since book one and she deserved better.
The silver lining is that my secret Harry/Lara ship dreams may be coming true! The book ends with Mab arranging a marriage between Harry and Lara Raith in order to seal the alliance between Winter and the vampires of the White Court. Now, I've been wanting for Harry and Lara to have a fling. They've been working together since before he knew Thomas was his brother, and they are more compatible than either of them wants to admit. It would be wildly entertaining to have them as a power couple for one or two books and it looks like this is what we might get.

Spoiler
We don't get much follow up on the "starborn" issue that was raised in the last couple of books except to kick the can down the road. Apparently the information is too hot handle and Listens to Wind has to get approval from the senior council to tell Harry and he asks for a year to do so. Dresdenverse books are spaced anywhere from a few hours apart, to a full year so who knows when we'll get the full story on this. Harry beats the Titan (of course) but he does it with the help of Marcone, who has taken up the coin of Thorned Namshiel and is now a Knight of the Blackened Denarius. So we're cueing up another villain for Harry to knock down either before or after he tackles the Nemesis. Speaking of which, the Nemesis has possessed Justine and that's why Thomas tried to kill the Svartalf king. He's still on ice on Demonreach island though, so he doesn't get to be part of the preventing apocalypse festivities.Murphy does, though, and of course now that she and Harry are an item she has to get killed to further the development of his character. So I think the thing to ask in this book was who DIDN'T die. You can definitely see that Butcher is looking to end the series. I'm just hoping Harry survives it.

Took away a star because one of my favorite character seems will be off stage for a while at least.
Harry has to save Chicago from a Titan. He has done the impossible before, but what will be the cost? The ending has a twist and people will wonder how it will play out. The question is how long to the next book.
