I love this book. It's a reread because I recently acquired the sequel and I wanted to refresh my memory but this even read better than the first time. I adored all the story lines. All the women were so distinct and their stories weaved into one another's so well without it being too forced. The writing flowed so well and all the characters were so well written. Kemi's story line was my favourite of all three and I'm looking forward to reading about her some more in the next book. This book weaved together really serious topics of love, loss, identity in a new country, suicide, being a refugee and loneliness. Lola Akinmade is automatically an author whose work is an instant must read and I'm looking forward to her novel in 2025.

thought provoking
I liked this book. It follows three different women of color who are loosely connected based on circumstance. One is an American flight attendant who becomes involved with a Swedish billionaire, one is a Nigerian American marketing executive who moves to Sweden for a DEI marketing role at this firm, and the other is a refugee who has found work at his building. Each woman has a very unique story and plot but there are consistent themes throughout on belonging, race and racism, class, love and identity. There is also quite a bit of x factor with steamy romances. I was dissatisfied with the way the book ended

Really good
I’m a pretty harsh book critic but I really like this book. It was easy to love and hate and appreciate each Character all at the same time. As a black woman who does the work of racial justice, it was beautiful to see diversity of black womanhood, but the impact of oppression was still there in each character’s life. I think the author did a great job of showing the nuances of individual experiences as influenced by collective society. She did a great job of showing privilege in various forms without oversimplifying what privilege looks like and feels like. I could see elements of my own experience in each of the main characters, even though their lives were so different. And I was able to appreciate the differences between their lives and mine. I also appreciate it that these black women didn’t necessarily immediately get along, because that is common. Sometimes other black women are my strongest adversaries, and this was depicted really well in this book in a way that shows how oppression furthers division. The characters are also just really great and it’s well written, and the storyline is good. I did think it was a little long but overall I thought it was a great book.

3.5 ⭐️
Really enjoyed the multiple storylines and how they were all loosely tied together. The book never reached a climax for me and the ending seemed rushed and incomplete.

I reluctantly finished this book. This was just all sad and pitiful. I understand BW seldom win, but let us do so in these imaginary worlds. I'm tired of the despair, the inevitable conflict we face. 6.8/10
