This is my first time reading this series. The first three that I read were the graphic novel version, this being the first text version that I've read. In several ways, I think I prefer the graphic novel version. This isn't bad, I just think I like the story better that way.

Not sure if this is because I'm changing over to text but I think this was my least favorite of the series so far. In many ways, I am starkly reminded that these kids are kids. I got slightly annoyed that they weren't taking what's going on as seriously as I feel they need to. I also wish that the characters were more developed than they were. Jake is labeled as the leader even though he hasn't done anything in the series to make him the leader in any way. I would be more likely to think of Tobias or Rachel as the leader. I'm also not really about Jake and Cassie's budding 'romance' as they have no chemistry or reason to get together, it feels pretty forced. I am going to continue in the series, though, as I'm interested to see where things go.

This used to be one of my favourite Animorphs books so I almost gave it 4 stars, but after reading it again I settled on 3. It is good don't get me wrong, but there's something lacking about Cassie as a narrator. However, I would probably rate it around 3.5 stars since it is a book where the Animorphs manage to do something quite important and reading about them trying out the dolphin morphs is fun. This book also introduces Ax who is an awesome character, so can't complain there. Overall, a good but not great installment in the series

Wait... if Ax could morph into a shark the whole time, why did he need anyone to RESCUE him????

It kind of bothers me that everyone else's motivation (so far) to fight is emotional and personal and made me cry, and Cassie's is like "GASP! save the planet!!!" I mean, I get that she loves animals, and I would obviously want to fight to save the planet from aliens intending to destroy it, too. But I wouldn't be like "oh, they're taking over people's minds, tearing apart friends and families, hurting people, killing people, oh well, no big deal... WHAT? they might WIPE OUT A SPECIES THAT ISN'T HUMAN? whoops now I'm invested in this." And I don't really feel like Cassie wouldn't be invested until she found out they would destroy the planet either.

Also, it doesn't even make sense for the Yeerks to destroy the planet/wipe out any species they can't control. Like... human beings can't exist in a vacuum. You can't leave humans alive but kill everything living in the rainforest. The rainforests will subsequently die, and eventually humans won't be able to survive either. Soooooo

And I kind of wish there was some distinction in voice between each of these POV characters, I won't lie. Tobias' was a little different I guess? But Ms. Applegate, if you are going to continue to write from the POV of middle school kids, you're going to have to stop describing things as "pleasurable." It's weirding me out.

(...Time to take a break from Animorphs before I'm tired of it, I think.)

I appreciate Cassie's insight on everybody. She's so observant, and definitely the glue that keeps everyone together. Similarly, further insight on Marco's character was much appreciated. And Cassie felt like the right person to shed an emphatic eye on his situation (for those who don't see through his facade, anyway---I am biased).

Overall, a more informative installment over plot (I'm sure we'll get more of these) which I enjoy. I enjoy fluff! I get to know the characters more!

And AX...hello? I'm already projecting 😭

Reviewing as I reread a childhood favorite series~
Cassie was probably always my least favorite to read, but The Message remains in my.... top 5? Maybe? of the series.
As someone who, at the time, was obsessed with Jacques Cousteau and wanted more of the fancy Andalites, it was like they crafted this book specifically for me at the time, and it held up to my nostalgia with the reread~
