the Great Ones

Again, the subversiveness of this series starts to show, as Cassie starts to think about whether or not the animals they acquire can actually consent to being morphed when they morph dolphins. We also get Ax's entrance into the series.

Loved the whale

That Friends reference had me GAGGING

This is easily the strongest entry since the first one.

Cassie questioning if taking over an intellectual creature was okay.

Less Yerk action and a lot more lore.

This is the kind of entry you would see mid series not book 4. It really adds a lot to the story and has me curious what’s around the corner.

I don’t think I appreciated Cassie as a character when I first read this series. I love that, in her first POV installment, she’s immediately raising questions of morality over the nature of morphing and suppressing animal instincts. At this point in the series, these concerns are easily brushed aside because morphing is necessary for the war effort. Will future ethical concerns be as easily dismissed?

Also - I love that this book includes not just dolphins but also whales.

Great Read Out Loud Story

I've read these books a few times, but never in order. I'm pretty sure this is the first time I've read this one.

These books are such a nostalgic joy for me, even though I never read them when I was a kid (which, again, is such a surprise, because they totally would have been my kind of book). So FIVE STARS FOR MAKING ME FEEL LIKE A KID AGAIN AND I AM NOT ASHAMED!

Anyway, this is the first book that is narrated by Cassie, and it was fun to get inside her head. I like Cassie, and I probably have more in common with her than the other Animorphs, but her indecisiveness can be frustrating, even while I completely understand the reluctance to take up the responsibility of being in charge.

The main animal morph of this book is dolphins! Which really feels like it ramps up that 90s nostalgia, because I swear every girl in the 90s was obsessed with dolphins, horses, or both. It was fun to see the playful side of the dolphins, though, and their interactions with whales and sharks offered some excitement.

I am eager to see how the events that happen in this book will change thing for the Animorphs going forward.

Cassie is great, and so are whales. This is one of the more philosophical installments, and while Cassie's issues of ethics and motives feels a little redundant given the emotional core of books 2 and 3, it ties nicely to her character and I love what she brings to the series. This book also has the first major plot progression as well as the requisite action sequence--a lot of few pages.
