This one suffers a bit from marketing whiplash. As a YA thriller, it’d be strong, but as an adult thriller? not so much. Jackson has a tendency to introduce recurring themes and then forget about them, only to bring them back with a sudden BAM before dropping them again. It makes the flow feel a little stop–start. The central mystery, the actual “scene of the book,” was interesting enough, and I didn’t dislike the story. But everything else around it just wasn’t gripping. Even though it’s a mystery, I wasn’t that fussed about solving it, and I found myself not rushing back to pick it up. Not bad, but not unputdownable either.

Not Quite Dead Yet was unfortunately a miss for me. I went in excited because the premise had so much potential, but it just didn’t deliver. I listened on Audible, which honestly made it worse—the narration made every character sound whiny and way too young for what was supposed to be an adult novel. The characters themselves felt immature, the plot was predictable, and overall it just didn’t hold my attention the way I hoped it would.

This book has so immaculately wrecked me emotionally in only a way that Holly Jackson can. How dare she get me so attached to a character and then give me that ending?!?! It is so messed up in a way that is going to stick with me (in a great way).
