I had looked forward to reading this book, as I had heard good things about the author. Unfortunately, the writing is uneven. Characters will be having a conversation and then abruptly seem to be across the room or out the door. It's like watching a stop motion film with some of the frames removed. I wasn't irritated by the main character's naïveté, like many of the reviewers. The other characters in the book seem to see her as unprofessional, too, but it's hard to tell because you are getting everything through the insecurity filter of the main character. The main character seems to be a poor judge of the emotions of others, so we get really abrupt changes in the tone of her interactions with other people...or maybe that's just the poor writing. The ending was disappointing. Suddenly, the writing becomes highly detailed and graphic as the murderer confesses. The murderer revels in the crimes in excruciating details, lingering on the most disgusting ones. The characters have a lot of potential, but the writing and the ridiculously graphic ending mean that I probably won't continue on in the series.
I've heard amazing things about Lynda throughout the years but this book left me so disappointed that I'm doubtful I'll ever pick up another one by her.
This book was part of the required reading for a "law and literature" workshop I'm participating in a few weeks from now. Unfortunately, I was rather underwhelmed. The story is fairly standard (horrible murderer-rapist on the loose! Catch him before he kills again!), the characters are pretty bland (young, keen female detective falls for rough, gruff chief) and the writing is just so-so. A part from the usual rush in wanting the murder to be caught, there isn't really much here to sate a more curious, savvy reader. Good for a beach read borrowed from the library, but not anything lasting or even unique.
Such a disappointment. I love Prime Suspect and I expected better from the creator of Jane Tennyson.

Got this because we've been slowly working our way through Prime Suspect, and LaPlante is best known from her work on that. You can most definitely tell that this book springs from the same mind. It's solid and while I probably won't rush out to get the rest of the series, I'll probably make my way to them eventually.
