I wanted to like this, but it ended up just being a "meh" book for me. I felt like not much really happened--one of the main "conflicts" was the "bad guys" (Sentinels) trying to steal the Elixir and The Great Secret (which, IMHO, was a great DISAPPOINTMENT) from the "good guys" (The Lazarus coven)--but it took 6 YEARS for them to truly get close to doing so! Years went by without them doing anything to try and meet their goal. I also felt like a lot of things were left up in the air at the end--did she and her father ever reconcile? What went wrong at the end ? Why couldn't they ever get in contact with Violet again? What the heck were the point of the shoes on the cover? (Ok, that one is silly, but really, I don't remember pretty purple shoes coming into play). And the book ended rather abruptly, it seemed.
**In all fairness, I ended up skimming through it near the end, so maybe I just missed the answers to some of these questions**
Spoiler
when Stricklend tried to raise Perry from the dead? I assume it was because the Dark Spirit missed Lilith telling Bram that a boy's blood was needed to raise a boy, and he used girl's blood instead, but it wasn't really explained**In all fairness, I ended up skimming through it near the end, so maybe I just missed the answers to some of these questions**
I like this less than The Winter Witch but more than The Witch's Daughter. I think the love story was too fictional but I liked Lilith otherwise. The ending needed some work. The main characters never figure out who the tratoirous spy is and that was disappointing. The reader knows, but the characters brush it off like it wasn't a big deal. The time jump was abrupt and confusing. I had to go back and try and figure out what was going on. Other than a small date on the chapter heading, it wasn't clear. Overall a nice story, but not my favorite.
This started out really strong, but I felt it could have been longer and better explained in terms of the large gaps of time throughout the second book. I wish we could also have delved into Bram's character a little more
So much potential, great bones for a fabulous book. Then the main character Lilith turns out to be an idiot and we have this love story that takes away instead of adds to the book. Her father, who she was close with gets mad and leaves her to fend for herself which struck me as completely not in character for who he was and what he represented. Overall it fell flat for me, which was a shame because it could have been great.

I struggled to get through this book. And actually this book finally broke me. Sadly I have decided not to read anymore books by this author.
In comparison to the other work by her that I've read, this doesn't live up. Keep in mind it's more historical than witch if you go to read it.
I really really enjoyed this. I was rather coerced into reading it, and struggled with the first chapter or two. But then, then I couldn't put it down. I couldn't get enough of Lily, of Bram and Louis, of poor pitiful Freddy, flighty loyal Charlotte and the despicable Strickland. I found the characters to be well drawn,; Stickland for example was on one level a playground bully and on another a highly educated and deeply evil 'Sentinel'. Bram was on occasion a little too love sick for my liking, over all a jolly good read.
