4.03 AVERAGE

I’m between 3 and 3.5 stars on this book, but since Goodreads doesn’t have the half stars, 3 will do.
This book was particularly difficult to get through, it was very dense and very heavy, like the entire time I was reading a strong boot was pushing down on my chest. On top of that, it felt like I was reading a book twice the length.
Reading this at 19 when all the characters are 19 or 20 hit me very hard right from the beginning and set a tone for this book that is probably what made it so difficult for me to get through.
I did enjoy long sections of this, and particularly the second half was great, but I must be honest in saying I only made it to even the half way point because I didn’t want to dnf a book so soon, and especially a 200 page one at that.
I am glad I stuck it out though because this was a great book I just didn’t find myself enjoying the read as much as I would’ve liked to, I understand the point is that this is a very harrowing and intense read, but it still felt like I could only go at a snail’s pace and time was going so slow it may as well have been going backwards.
I hope upon a re read in however long I come to enjoy it more but for now it was good but I can’t say I loved it.

I can't do this right now. It's a little intense and I need books to help me find my chill.

Harrowing and heartbreaking, boredom and abject terror, brutality and kindness. This book has been read by millions and I hope they all keep the horror that war is with them after they put the book down. The only way to keep from sending our young into the next conflict of egos and greed.

Wow. What a brutal and depressing, but incredibly powerful and poetic read. I’d seen the Netflix movie like a year prior to reading this and that was pretty dark, but this is a new level, something that can’t really be conveyed easily or perfectly through film. I felt bummed after finishing the movie, I feel empty inside after finishing this.

Kind of incredible how hard this hit the world when it was first released in 1928. Impactful enough for Hitler to get offended and order it burned.

Shows the dark realities of war. Was left heartbroken after finishing in class.
