Harrowing and heartbreaking, boredom and abject terror, brutality and kindness. This book has been read by millions and I hope they all keep the horror that war is with them after they put the book down. The only way to keep from sending our young into the next conflict of egos and greed.

Wow. What a brutal and depressing, but incredibly powerful and poetic read. I’d seen the Netflix movie like a year prior to reading this and that was pretty dark, but this is a new level, something that can’t really be conveyed easily or perfectly through film. I felt bummed after finishing the movie, I feel empty inside after finishing this.

Kind of incredible how hard this hit the world when it was first released in 1928. Impactful enough for Hitler to get offended and order it burned.

Shows the dark realities of war. Was left heartbroken after finishing in class.

Not going to bother marking individual triggers - all of the usual related to war and body horror and atrocities

Had to read this for school, I would probably appreciate this more now

So, at last I've finished this book! I ended up really enjoying(? Is that the wrong word?) it. Obviously I read it in translation, and so I'm not sure exactly who this comment is towards, but my main criticism is the fact that certain phrases and terms are repeated a lot very near each other. I can't tell you the amount of times I read 'bent double'. Aside from that, I thought that it was a very poignant account of a soldier in World War Two and it was highly descriptive. I definitely think it deserves four stars.
