This book is part of a previously established 10th grade curriculum that I walked in on. I had never even heard of it until now. In the beginning, I was skeptical of its place in the curriculum as I saw the faces of disgust on the kids as we trudged through graphic description after description of the bloody warfare.

I'm not entirely interested in war or anything related to historically significant battles, but by the time I got to chapter 6, this book wouldn't let me put it down. Looking at it holistically, I have to say that it's a beautifully written novel with grandiose statements about the most insignificant little matters of trench warfare. I loved how, despite being a book covering lofty subjects like life, death, love, enemies, it still a book about boys being boys.

I love this book. I love it and am so glad I was forced to read it. Now that the students are in chapter 10, I've had a few tell me that they finished the book early. They couldn't drop it either.

Fantastic, poetic, heartbreaking, and important to read
dark sad medium-paced

The breath of desire that then arose from the coloured backs of the books, shall fill me again, melt the heavy, dead lump of lead that lies somewhere in me and waken again the impatience of the future, the quick joy in the world of thought, it shall bring back again the lost eagerness of my youth. I sit and wait.

Likely one of the first novels I ever read. My clumsy use of "novel" refers to literature, not simply novelistic genre books routinely purchased at drug stores and discount stores and read in a hour. That grist was so much of my life before university. Aside from the Gehenna revealed, All Quiet proved instructional in its subtle handling of empathy and color. That may appear didactic, but it was enormously significant in my life. I think I have read it twice since then. We've all been handled irrevocably by Ramarque.

how have I never read this book? it is a subtle masterpiece. it is not for the faint of heart - grim and gritty and spare but still artful in its language. I'd like to call it remarkable without being accused of making a pun...
