3.75- whatever this type of woman is I love reading this genre. When main characters are so justified in their delusions it just makes me so happy.
One’s Company is absurd tale of one woman’s quest to recreate the world of her favorite TV show after winning the lottery. Five years after a trauma that upends her life, Bonnie sets out to rebuild the set of Three’s Company, where she plans to live alone, reenacting the lives of each character year after year. Seeking solace in the comfort of her favorite show, Bonnie aims to isolate herself from the outside world and any human connection, believing love is the root of all of her problems. As time goes on, Bonnie descends deeper and deeper into her obsession.
I am a sucker for a weird book. One’s Company is downright absurd, featuring a delusional main character and bizarre storyline. I loved every second of it. Bonnie is concerningly relatable in all of her madness. Don’t we all like to escape from reality from time to time? As a fellow daydreamer & avid reader, I felt for her.
I had quite the imagination. And I was a fool back then. I read a lot of books. I believed in fiction. If something unpleasant happened, I could believe it was good. I had that power. I was delusional.
Funnily enough, I found myself obsessed with this book, unable to put it down. As we watch the progression of Bonnie’s delusions, we see the dangers of isolation and using escapism to cope with unresolved trauma. Absolutely brilliant debut & another favorite of the year. I will be keeping my eye out for what Hutson does next!

I really did not care for this one. I can get behind an unlikeable main character (especially a female one) but Bonnie has very few redeeming qualities. It was impossible to root for her because she was just being an asshole most of the book. I understand and empathize with the trauma she endured but the way she treated herself and others was difficult to read honestly. Especially the way she treats her friend Krystal, who was suffering just as much as she was, as she lost her whole family in a single day. Bonnie did not seem to recognize that at all. I felt really sorry for Krystal.
Also, there are several instances where Bonnie becomes unconscious and is woken up after an indeterminate amount of time has passed, which felt like lazy writing. The story generally was not well paced and I lost interest after the house was finished. This book has some interesting ideas, but it fell completely flat for me. 2/5 ☆

Thought I was getting a silly goofy time and instead was absolutely waterboarded with trauma.
As a lover of 'lone female character spirals out of control' books I thought I'd enjoy this from the vague description, and while I expected a certain amount of trauma to be the trigger of the main characters bizarre behaviour, I was definitely blindsided by the weight of it and how much more tragic it then felt throughout compared to what I'd expected.
I also didn't realise the show was a real thing so I almost definitely was lacking context in some places which wouldn't have helped.

I like weird books, and I really liked the premise of this one. It started off strong- the attention to detail in the re-creation of the Three’s Company set were impressive and Bonnie’s descent into isolation made me feel very claustrophobic, but the ending felt rushed and almost unfinished with an abrupt and undeserved ‘happy ending’ for the MC. Overall, I wish the author would have pushed the absurdism just a bit further towards the end of the book, but it was well written and I will certainly read more of her work.
