*Owlcrate December 2016*

Finally got around to reading this one...honestly if I had never read it I’d be okay.

This is probably a really cool twist on a classic, but I’ve never read the original. It was a little graphic/creepy for my liking, but all in all a happy ending, which I’m always rooting for.

DID NOT FINISH

DNF: The writing is terrible at the sentence level & the storyline is made up entirely of clichés with a little Phantom of the Opera vibes thrown in. Didn't make it past the first 50 pages or so.

*I read this as an ARC as part of #ARCAugust. I read up to page 264 (61%) before DNFing it because, nah son. I read this in August 2017 and reviewed then. As always, this is my honest opinion. All reviews at: www.theterriblebookblogger.wordpress.com

I never finished AG Howard’s other series…the retelling on Alice in Wonderland, mainly because Alice in Wonderland is not my cup of tea. But this is a Phantom of the Opera retelling!!! I love retellings!!! I love the Phantom movie!!! I will try!! But no…just no.

This book is not my cup of tea. I don’t like Howard’s writing most of the time. (There’s a lot of establishing a new thing in a sentence and then writing an entire, unnecessary paragraph detailing/explaining the new thing, and no). But I kept reading because PHANTOM OF THE OPERA!

Rune is…special…she see’s rainbows when she sings…she has magic voice powers. Magic glowing eyes, etc, etc, etc. Basically, your average character. Actually, if you’ve read Splintered, they’re very similar main characters (I don’t remember the main character’s name in Splintered and don’t feel like looking it up. Alyssa? Probably Alyssa). So, anyway, magic eyes, magic voice, “normal” girl

I don’t read paranormal romances for a reason.

So anyway, the story is all right, up to the point where I stopped reading. Not my favorite thing, but decent enough.

It’s just…the big reveal of why Rune has this magical singing voice and why the phantom still lives was not great, or good, or even interesting. It was just a big flat out NO for me.

Overall, the bit I read, makes me wish I had simply read the actual Phantom of the Opera novel and left it at that.

I have loved The Phantom of the Opera since I first heard my mother play me the original Broadway album as a child. I love the original story by Gaston Leroux and I love spin off stories as well. I think this was excellent! One of my favorite YA writers, I love Howard's Splintered series as well. Once I started Roseblood, I was hooked and I couldn't stop!

This review was originally posted on StrupagRoseBlood is a Phantom of the Opera retelling. Let me start by saying that although I'm familiar with the Phantom story, I'm by no means a 'Phan'. However, the premise of this book captured my attention and I was lucky enough to be sent an ARC by the publisher.

Yes, this is the same A.G. Howard of the Splintered series. However, although I have the books on my shelves, I haven't yet read them, so RoseBlood was my first encounter with A.G. Howard's writing.

I must admit, I struggled with the opening quarter of the book. I felt it to be rather slow and it took me a while to become invested in the story.

However, once the 'scene-setting' element was over I definitely enjoyed the story more. Although, it was more Thorn that kept me reading than Rune.

Howard's retelling of this story is creepy, mysterious and imaginative. She draws upon her research of the legend to inspire her story and the result is an interesting combination of High School tale and paranormal romance.

Howard's writing is beautiful. Her descriptions are stunning and as a result this tale truly comes to life in the mind's eye.

While I ended up enjoying this book and its concepts, I wasn't crazy about it. Perhaps I went into it with overinflated expectations? When I did really start to get into the story, it ended! Personally, I felt the ending too abrupt - I didn't feel satisfied by its content or pacing.

I realise this is a somewhat mixed review, but I *did* enjoy this, I just wasn't blown away by it. I loved the gothic nature of it though - Howard absolutely captured that creepy, Gothic feel.

All in all, once the book gets going it's a good read with interesting concepts and some intriguing characters. It's Howard's descriptive writing that I enjoyed most though - I felt as though I was actually in RoseBlood!

I just couldn’t finish it. I just couldn’t.
