2.5 stars. Honestly, the extra half a star is for the last 100 pages. That shit was fun as hell to read.
Okay, so. I feel like this is the book JLA was like really the most hype to write. Book 1 was enjoyable enough, book 2 was an absolute drag, but like all the things are happening here. The book starts with Poppy going batshit and killing a bunch of people, then she's held captive, almost ransomed back to the Ascended, rescued by Casteel only to almost die, then to get brought back to life and suddenly have all the powers. Seriously, I was so annoyed for the first five hundred pages of this book because Poppy just kept getting so overpowered. It was starting to get ridiculous. She's the rightful ruler to both kingdoms, all the wolven are bonded to her, she can bring people back from the dead, she can summon fire from thin air and cause storms, she can disintegrate bitches with a thought. The wolven randomly started calling her Liessa which means queen or something but all I can think of is that Mhysa scene with Khaleesi in Game of Thrones. Oh, also Poppy's a god. With the most special god blood there is.
Don't get me wrong, I love a powerful lady but I was just like good lord what more can there be? And then to have her get her ass absolutely handed to her when she finally faces Ileana was just *chef's kiss*. I loved that part.
I do think the book kinda blathered on a bit and could've been like at least two hundred pages shorter than it was. Just getting rid of every line where Casteel says some stupid horny comment would cut at least 50 pages probably. I really just wish that all of Cas and Poppy's sex scenes happened off page and I didn't have to read them because I just was staring at the book in disgust. Picture Sam Weir's face of repulsion and that's me reading this book. I feel so bad for Kieran dude. Like having to just stand there and awkwardly make sure Poppy doesn't drain Casteel's blood completely while they're literally dry humping each other. Let this man have a threesome, please. I will not be satisfied until it happens. He's just there to like answer all of Poppy's inanely boring questions. Oh, and so Poppy can watch him get head in public. *please, help me*
I still don't really care about Poppy and Cas as a couple tbh. They just do nothing for me. When Poppy met Gianna, who Cas was supposed to marry, and was like 'haha I'm so glad you don't have feelings for my husband because I'd rip you to shreds if you did' was so dumb lmfao. like it was there for absolutely no reason. Poppy didn't need to have a random moment of insecurity or to arouse Cas with her violent tendencies either(he's always aroused by her, like he doesn't need more reasons).
Don't really love that Tawny has been absent for two books just to show up at the end and then immediately be put in a coma. Like, girl. What. She got poisoned by shadow stone or something and her hair is turning white so I'm really hoping when she wakes up she basically turns into Laena Targaryen and starts riding the draken and fucking shit up. But hopefully she doesn't go out the same was as my girl, Laena. Hopefully, Tawny actually becomes a character in the next book. Also, still can't get over the fact that JLA really named her two black characters 'yellow-brown' and 'little dark one'. like...girl.
SPEAKING OF NAMES. I have beef with JLA when it comes to naming characters. The major offenses are above because like what in the hell was she thinking. But these are ones that just aggravated me to no end reading.
So first, there's Malec and then Malik. Okay, Eloana named Malik that because she still had the hots for Malec--weird move, but okay. Then there's Eloana and Ileana. Then you find out that Ileana is actually named Isbeth and apparently there's a goddess named Ileana but I like to think she chose that name to be petty af because it's basically identical to Eloana's. Either she's petty af or secretly in love with her. Then there was Nyktos and Nektas. I legit thought the second one was a typo when I first saw it only to realize they're two entirely different people you meet in the same scene. They're not even related. Like, WHAT.
And the one that I am most offended by.
There are two Talia's in this book. TWO. One is a random healer named Talia and one is a random child who just appears out of nowhere. like HOW DARE YOU BESMIRCH MY NAME THIS WAY. TALIA IS A MAIN CHARACTER'S NAME. *screeches*

Also, I just want to talk real quick about the part when Cas and Poppy find a random little paperboy and start asking him questions, and he just busts out with this hilarious accent like he's a little chimney sweeper from Mary Poppins. It came out of nowhere but it made me snort. So did the scene when they meet Nyktos and he's like 'which one of you is my relative' and Poppy is like 'IT IS I'. Like, girl, why are you talking like that? Where did this come from? What are you doing? Also, who in their right mind would just be like 'oh it's me!' when this scary intimidating KING OF THE GODS asks that. I'd be like 'if I answer this man is he going to kill me? like will he just obliterate me?' and Poppy is like nah, it's fine.
The last 100 pages were the best imo. I was eating up the drama. Isbeth is a wild villain. Like ma'am stop touching everyone. Have you never heard of personal space? But then again she's a rapist so I shouldn't be too surprised. I loved watching Poppy get her ass handed to her. I kind of saw it coming like, things were going too well for them but either way it was fun to read.
And that's all I got.
(I'm only now realizing how often I say 'like' in these reviews, I'm so sorry but I'm not changing it.)

I struggled through a lot of this book, I love the characters but a lot of the scenes felt disjointed. I was planning on giving up on the series after this one but the last 100 pages FULLY reinvested me in it
