I can not believe this is the book that made some people lose interest in the series.

While the middle was a little slow, I appreciate the time put into the world building and character development.

The last 80% of this book had me on the edge of my seat and I fear I will be marinating in this one for a while (but not too long bc I’ve already downloaded the next book 😏)

I was pretty engaged in the first 2 books of this series and they seemed quick reads. This one...I really struggled to finish it. I don't mind sex scenes, but there are SOOOO many in this book that I started to find them distracting and skipped a lot of them. They didn't add to the plot. They didn't add to the character development. They didn't seem all that different from the ones before. They didn't seem to have a point anymore.
On top of that, a lot of character interactions seemed to get repetitive in a lot of ways. How many times must we be told that she asks a lot of questions? Or how many different titles she has? Or how many different bloodlines she might or might not have? Or how she can bring her eather to help just about anyone in any situation?
Is she just an overpowered 19 yr old among a bunch of really, really old characters, who doesn't have to do much to earn any level of respect or loyalty, and just gets more powerful for no reason and no plot needed? After awhile, I felt like the author just kept adding abilities to Poppy that didn't add to her character development and instead took away any need for any kind of a team of people or loyalists or even friends around her.

This book really disappointed me, and although I do want to know what happens next, IDK if I can force myself to finish another book if it's like this one.

I give this a 3 because wtf was that? the whole book was a long drawn out plot that could have been pushed forward here, but felt like the author didnt just so they can have an extra book ... and that says a lot seeing as there are MORE books to this series... it was just unnecessary.

ejmoff's review against another edition

DID NOT FINISH

This was a hard one to DNF because I still loved all the characters and the idea of the plot, the writing just wasn't doing it for me. There was way to much question and answer to explain the world and what was going on and it felt like the same conversations were happening over and over again. There was no reason for any of the first three books to be as long as they were.

No no no no No!

I thought this was going to be the last book of the series! I can't wait for the next one!

As for the book itself- it deserves the 5 star rating I gave. I have never finished a book so quickly but I literally could not put it down. Instead of focusing on a very important research paper, I decided to hide away in the world of Atlantia for hours on end. It was worth it.
