Nicely dovetails with the rest of canon, other that some of the ages of previous winners [namely Beetee] don't really make sense but I guess I'm basing that entirely on the fact that Jeffrey Wright is actually *younger* than Woody Harrelson.

A solid book
A bit disappointed in what we got in this book.
I had hoped that it would have matured with the audience of the original trilogy, but this felt pretty childish except at the very end. I think it would have been more interesting to get a new perspective on the arena, or maybe more of Haymitchs life after the games, but instead it was a pretty standard "the good guys versus the evil careerists and the regime". The plotline oftrying to destroy the arena didn't really give much to the story either, instead it mostly took Haymitch away from the action. Maybe a way to skip out on writing a lot of action scenes? The fact that known characters keep popping up felt forced and made the world feel pretty small.
There are quite a few annoyances, but what's here is still serviceable, though a bit derivative of the original trilogy. I did find that the ending resonated a bit with me, though it does revel a bit too much in the misery perhaps.

I had such high hopes for this one, maybe the expectations were too high…
I was confused most of the time. Some things were written very fast (like Louella’s death) and other things super slow (all the songs/poems in the end). I didn’t connect to any of the characters enough to care about them dying, and I felt that Haymitch also did not care that much. Why was he such an important player? Why did he need to found the newfounders and did everyone see him as the ‘leader’. There was really nothing special about him tbh.
Also in the end, with him being all broody and feeling sorry for himself but because ‘he made a promise to Lenore Dove’ he would keep on living. The epilogue makes it sounds like he is the one that caused the end of the sunrise on the reaping, but he has a really small part in it. Katniss deserves all credits for that.
It felt like a ‘filler’ book where she tried to compile all the older characters from the first series into this one. Super unlikely that all these people (Beetee, Wiress, Maggs, Astrid) played such a big part in his story since you don’t feel that at all in the original series
Overall, disappointed that I did not like it more. For now 3⭐️ but that’s mostly because the original series is so deep in my heart, might lower the rating later
