It is going to take a very long time to recover from this.

4.5 ⭐️ I accidentally read this in one day and it transported me back to 7th grade reading the first hunger games. Poor Haymitch. I loved seeing how everything connected together!! President Snow really did not get a brutal enough end. Can’t wait for the movie lol!

sooooo good. suzanne collins doesn’t change the intensity or the message of the story with the fame that the series has gotten, and I really appreciate that. I was really excited to learn about Haymitch’s background. this book is unique in that we know what the outcome will be, it’s inevitable, but I still felt like I was on a real and unpredictable journey. this has made me want to reread the whole series and it also showed the pronounced differences between Haymitch and Katniss as narrators (Katniss being unreliable and Haymitch being quite observant and alert in this book). this book truly solidifies how sad I feel for Haymitch. I loveeeed the foreshadowing and how it added so much to what we already knew about this world. I want her to write another- maybe from a career POV? like Finnick?

The Hunger Games series is one that holds a special place in my reader heart so this prequel was a must read for me. I loved the nostalgia this story brings and getting Haymitch’s story special. We see the why behind his behavior and I had a serious soft spot for Haymitch in the original trilogy and this story made me adore him further. The part about these books that is so hard is how much you fall in love with characters you know are going to die. The entire premise is outlined for us and even though we know what is going to happen, its devastating. So, thank you to Suzanne Collins who ripped my heart out again.
