I could sit and philosophize about this book for hours. While any series that carries on for this long, and for this many volumes, runs the risk of approaching cash-grab territory, Collins fortunately only writes when she has something to say. And how refreshing.

You could argue that the series has fallen into formulaic tropes, but I would counter that it only follows its own central theme of how implicit submission (to borrow Hume’s quote from the beginning) can erode our humanity. Each of Collins’s characters is deeply felt, fully developed, and painfully, messily human. And that makes each of these novels stand on its own.

This is just as brutal as we’ve come to expect, and maybe another familiar warning siren, but it’s also just as gripping as its predecessors. On top of its breathless pace, Collins breathes some lofty intellect into the story, too. The weaving in of Poe’s “The Raven” stands as a bleak contrast against Haymitch feeling “condemned to live.” The dappling of David Hume’s philosophy throughout (whose alleged famous last words were “I am in flames” are echoed in the book’s closing phrase “I love you like all-fire”) add weight to Haymitch’s outlook and trajectory.

I could blab on and on, but I won’t. Except to say Maysilee is an absolute queen.

So many great lines. So many gut-wrenching moments. Bravo, is all I can say.

Couldn’t put this down! Brought me back to middle school Morgan who was first discovering these types of books.

okay so i just finished sunrise on the reaping and…

i have no words.

right from the get go i knew this book was gonna wreck me.

well, it did more than that. it shattered me. it broke me. but in a way it assembled and prepared me for the damage that it was gonna unleash upon me.

i got to see so many of the beloved characters we’ve always known: haymitch (obviously), wiress, mags, beetee, plutarch (i never cared for him before, but i LOVE him now), EFFIE, and then we got to see more characters like asterid (katniss’s mom (which is funny bc i’ve read multiple fics where her mom is named aster. those fic writers were on to sth), burdock (katniss’s dad. it’s just a barrage of plant names i guess), and otho mellark (peeta’s dad!).

we got lots of romance between haymitch and lenore dove aka his covey girlfriend. but i never really cared for them lmao. i was way more excited about the smattering of hayffie interactions that i got. effie is a sweetheart as always. brainwashed and clueless, but a sweetheart. i think the epilogue eludes to him being single forever after lenore dove’s death. but i can already smell the new hayffie fics brewing on ao3 hahahah. it turns out effie is a few years older than haymitch btw.

and omggggg i love maysilee so much. she’s the best. she reminds me SO much of eadlyn. the bite. the insults. the stuck-up and spoiled attitude.

i love haymitch’s voice. it’s so…him. 16-year-old and innocent but then hardened overnight bc of the games. thank god it’s fiction bc if the things he had to go through were real…i think i’d have cried for real (i didn’t).

and haymitch saying katniss is basically like him…but luckier
