First of all I want to say thank you for gifting me this arc in exchange for a honest review.

I was super excited about the premise of this book, I saw the author’s tiktok and the videos she made about this book made me run to apply for the arc.

I’ll start it by saying I loved the ending of this book, the last 60% was really enjoyable to read. That being said the pacing was all over the place in this book. Because of the pacing issue I didn’t find myself investing in the story until I got to the last 60% which made the first half of the book really drag on.

This is Britney S. Lewis’ sophomore novel and I am excited to read her future releases.

Enjoyed. The writing was beautiful and the plot was unique, but it slowed down in the middle quite a bit.

i'm settling for a 4 star but i'm still not confident with it. It started off great! The first chapter was spooky and already had me trying to guess what was going on. There was definitely something that made me want to keep reading it but I felt it was repetitive in some parts and the ending felt rushed.

This year I told myself to try different genres of books and I have been on a roll! The cover quickly got my attention! A scary looking black girl with curls?! I was sold! When I grabbed this Britney S. Lewis book, I knew nothing about her being from the same area as me but finding this out made me even more intrigued about her writing. After talking to her, I liked her even more! Who knew I would turn into a supernatural girlie?!

Hylee Williams was basically a normal teenage girl to the eye, but after experiencing disappearing right in front of her families eyes, she wasn’t as normal as she thought. Dealing with the grief of her missing brother, Hylee’s memory seemed to block out memories in her mind. 9 years after the tragedy is when she experiences her first disappearing act and it lives her family scared…of her.

Hylee is sent from the city to the suburbs to live with her grandmother just because her parents can’t handle anything else. There she meets a boy at a party named Eliam Roads and they connect right away. While talking to him, she disappears again and ends up in an alternate dimension where she back in her childhood 9 years ago. Waking up and noticing she’s still at the party, Hylee runs home. Even though she disappeared in front of his eyes, Eilam still wants to get to know her. Will her supernatural power be too much for him or is he hiding a secret of his own?

This book was just…amazing! I loved it from start to finish! I never thought I would read a book about time travel, but now I’m a fan! I definitely recommend this book!

Thank you Britney S. Lewis for posting your giveaway on Twitter and allowing me to come across this and read this amazing book! I love science-fiction and magical realism and it is so rare that you get to read this type of book with a Black main character. Lewis incorporates African American culture and family skillfully in this narrative. I can really relate to Hylee as the second child and first daughter of the family and always feeling like you have to fix what’s wrong with the family. The Dark Place is an amazing read that I’ve already been recommending to my friends!

The premise of the story was a cool idea, but it was so slow and things were not wrapped up as well as I think they could've been. I don't need to be spoon fed stuff in books, but a few things felt unfinished/unexplained and rushed while other things were drawn out. I skimmed over a pretty big section after pushing myself to finish this.

I received an eARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book is 100% YA, very young YA. I would say 7th and up. I found the writing to be all over the place, the dialogue lackluster, and the pacing not consistent. We would lag on a plot point for too long, then get kicked into supersonic warp speed. Unique concept, definitely belongs in a classroom library.

This book is essentially Coraline but make it black and throw in time travel reminiscent of Dark Matter. This was a short and loving book. The bond between Hylee and her older brother Bubba really pulled at my heart strings. I think most can relate to Hylee’s struggle of trying to understand her parents while they don’t seem to want to understand her better. It was a beautifully tragic book.

I really wanted a bit more. I wanted more of grandmommy’s background. I wanted to dive deeper into the relationship Eliam and  his grandfather. I just wanted more. I know that’s hard to do when you’re trying to keep the book under 300 pages but overall I really enjoyed this one.
