I am a teacher turned librarian and an avid reader. Nina says books are alive, and I fully agree! This book was fun and a love story for book-lovers, absolutely. My only complaint is in the lack of time spent on Lennox. I really appreciated the balance between Lennox and Nina and think they bring something out in each other that they both needed. Which is why the relationship deserved more than a rushed ending in the last few chapters. Otherwise, loved it!
Unread shelf project 2020: book 15.
Work from home 2020: book 9.
Oh, how I love books, and books about books, and books about people who are as avidly insane about books as I am.
At times Nina irritated me, and honestly if I were to rate this book on the characters and interactions, it would probably be closer to a 3/5.
However... the atmosphere, the descriptions, the beautiful language, and the love of books expressed throughout this novel — as well as the growth Nina experienced — bumped this up to a 5/5.
Cannot wait to read the rest that I own by Jenny Colgan!

Completely confused by the title. I do enjoy books about libraries, books, reading etc., but this one never really caught me. Nina seemed pretty naive and not all that intelligent given all the reading she did. The supporting characters popped in and out if the story haphazardly as well. I suppose that may have been intentional.
For reasons that are unclear to me reading about small towns in Scotland makes me swoon where reading about small towns in the US irritates me. This has a small Scottish town, a mobile bookshop, a grumpy hero and a lovely host of side characters. The romantic aspect is sweet and slow moving. The descriptions of the landscapes and the food were divine. It’s a love letter to books which made me happy- even if it is a bit of a fantasy that the presence of a book shop and a good librarian would cause people to put down their phones and pick up physical copies of books. This was a warm hug in book form.
I absolutely loved this story. Not only is it set mainly in Scotland, but the way the author weaves the strands of the story together is done so well that I had to read it in one sitting. This book has gone straight onto my favourites list.
The idea of turning a run down van into somewhere people can indulge their love of books is a brilliant one. Around the islands of Scotland there are many businesses who use this kind of thing as a way of getting to people living in remote places. I actually remember the butchers van coming round the streets near my Gran years ago, and I know it is something which has slowed died out in many places. This story had me seeing everything in my head as I read, imagining the places and people.
Not only do we have the main story, but there are many side stories as well. From a family struggling to survive, to a man missing his family who live many miles away. Then we have the main female character, Nina. I connected with her so well throughout the story and couldn't wait to see what happened to her, the business and her love life. I have to say that my very favourite page, not chapter but page, in the whole book is the very last one. Not because it's the last page of the book, but because of what it contains. Suffice to say it finishes off one characters story extremely well.
Absolutely loved it, would recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading books! Huge thanks to the publishers for providing a copy via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.
