I love the concept of focusing on people who’ve returned from portal worlds rather than discovering the portal world, and how they cope with that. The worldbuilding is really cool. I like how they explain the different ‘directions’ and types of worlds and how they work. You can tell a lot of thought went into this.

The actual plot was just okay for me. I’m not really a murder mystery person. But the writing, worldbuilding, (some of) the characters, and learning about how the school works made up for it.

Unfortunately this was bordering on too gory for me. I’m squeamish about that stuff and I had to skim some parts. Annoyingly I’m the most interested in learning about Jack and Jill’s world, because I love a gothic setting, especially if there are vampires. But I’m betting that one’s even gorier… :/ I am gonna try to continue though.

Would also love to get to see Nancy’s world, but I’m guessing we won’t 😖

Loved this little book, will be picking up the rest of the series! My only complaint was there was a lot of high level vocabulary that I had to look up, and there were a few scenes or segways that felt very rushed through. That being said, it was a very interesting introduction to this world and series. I found each character unique and intriguing, and I appreciated that they all had different stories for the doors they walked into (whether I liked them or not). Loved the diversity too - ace/aro and trans main characters. Look forward to continuing!

A really easy fun read that has me hungering for more from this world! I loved the take on what happens after the chosen kids get back from the magical worlds they go on adventures to. I liked the fast pace of the book, with a big cast of characters that drew me in.

Wheelhouse items: magical school, murder mystery, outcasts, mad scientists, intriguing worldbuilding.

Content warning details:
As a result of travelling to the magical world, the main protagonist doesn't eat much food and displays disordered eating habits, but because of the magical alterations this is "fine" for her. That depiction didn't really sit right with me.
Another character is a transboy, who was rejected from the fairy realm when they realised he was a boy (because they're transphobic fairies apparently). One of the school kids is transphobic to him to his face, but everyone else supports him. He briefly refers to his deadname.
There are a bunch of murders at the school which includes body mutilation, not very graphic but still described in detail.

Very reminiscent of Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children and The House in the Cerulean Sea. If you like the boarding school for odd/creepy children trope this story is also for you! The book is so short and the plot moves quickly so you’ll be picking up the second book the next day, plan accordingly.
