Tana French

4.1 AVERAGE

This is my 4th and favorite Tana French so far. As usual, the writing and the audiobook performance are outstanding. The book is beautiful, suspenseful, intense, emotional, and also a very satisfying follow-up to In the Woods (it felt necessary in that way).

I had one major issue with the book. The character Daniel seems to me to be coded as autistic, and at times I felt very upset about how he was treated by other characters and the writing in general. While he is generally beloved there were also moments when it felt like the book thought something was wrong with him in a way I had difficulty unpacking. It's tricky to gauge what exactly is being said by his characterization, partly because (and this is a good thing), he and everyone else were very complex characters. I'd be curious to hear what others think.

3 and a half.

I liked the ideas behind this story--putting a detective who is a spot-on twin to the victim--back into the victim's life and see how those around her react. Unfortunately, it felt like this book was just too drawn out. I got really tired of the dialogue ( and I usually love dialogue!). The group the detective lived with were not suppose to be people that were easy to relate to and she succeeded in that regard for me! Also, unfortunately, the character's love to flip around the f-word. It is pretty easy to not even see it if you read like I do, but I was getting sick of having to read that way.

the secret history but better and there’s barely any school

Good! Better than In The Woods

This book. Is. Amazing. That's all I can really say.

I think I started to understand that with Tana French it was more like drama thriller woven to evoke emotion, empathy, shared humanity and the messiness of life and the complexity rather than the mystery itself. The premise was so unlikely, but she still able to left me hooked and affected deeply by the end of it, that I could easily looked beyond the obviousness of the case itself.

It started off good, then I wasn't satisfied with the ending. But I LOVE the main character's (Cassie) personality!

we all have a moment where we finish a book and realize, with an ache, that you can never read it for the first time again.
this was that book for me.
