Alright, I bought this book, because the bookstore didn't have My Brilliant Friend, and I interpreted the title as "Days of Abandon" instead of "Abandonment." I was thoroughly mentally unprepared for the amount of dispair the protagonist feels. The loss of her ability to function and take care of (or care for!) her children is terrifying, especially because it touches on a deep fear I have of getting lost in emotions and losing perspective. But, the book is worth reading precisely because the author conveys these feelings so acutely.

She captures grief and all the anxieties of being pretty enough so realistically that the book is almost comforting to read. Something I think not everyone will love is that you spend the entirety of the book in the main character’s head. You’ll be forced to feel absolutely every emotion she feels, and listen to every single one of her passing thoughts while she forgets about the world around her. There were definitely times in the book where I wanted to yell at Olga, but if you like books that really pull you in and force you to feel anxious, heartbroken, angry etc … it’s a good one for that
Brutal, vulgar, and utterly genius. I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to end a Ferrante novel without staring blankly at a wall for some time after, but I'm not quite sure I'd want it any other way. This book is one to pick up and revisit again and again for years to come.
This book... just wow. The narration for Olga's gradual loss of sanity, as a reaction to being quite brutally abandoned was so beautifully written.
If you were to try and list out the actual events that took place in this book, it would not come up to par at all with the experience of reading this book for the first time - this, being as a result of Elena Ferrante's absolutely amazing writing.
The narration in particular brought forth so many raw concepts in regards to a women's interactions with men, society and even herself, within the context of a domestic housewife learning to accept a sudden divorce which she had not seen coming; it feels like you get a firsthand witnessing of the unabashed unravelling of her mind.
My one discrepancy however would be that the text would sometimes drag along; around page 100 or so I found myself having to force myself to continue, it was still enjoyable however I felt like the main character was going through motions and thoughts we’d already been introduced to prior. If this was intentional or not, I have no clue, but it personally made it less enjoyable to read.

Harmi, ettei puolikkaita tähtiä voi antaa - tämä olisi 3,5.
Hyvin rakennettu tarina, jonka henkilöhahmot tuntuvat aidoilta ja jollain tasolla samaistuttavilta.

Once again I don't know how to rate a book...The writing was wonderful but this book filled me with literal dread. I think it's worth the experience to read it once but honestly some of the passages just absolutely stung, and like not always in a good way. I feel like I lowkey regressed in emotional maturity and wellness I'm not gonna lie, but also.... I mean who's fault is that?
