Couldn't someone have told Mr Golding that maybe it isn't such a good idea to define female characters by their having of breasts only? Yikes.
Requires effort by the reader, especially early on due to the language and point of view, but this is well rewarded by a thought provoking and, in the second half, action packed story that i found i couldn’t put down.
Really good and definitely keep going if you struggle to start with

This is a challenging book. Slow to start and at times difficult to follow if you don't understand what's going on. I feel like this one really would (unfortunately) be best read decades ago when you could pick it up and not know what it is about - the reveal at the end is part of the descriptions now. Profoundly sad in a lot of ways. An interesting experiment for sure. That said...I'm not convinced this is a "great" novel - simply an interesting one. 3.5 stars.
slow-paced
This book really affected me, but I can't say I enjoyed it exactly. It's worth a read.
I was not expecting the absolute gut-punch of the last chapter and a half. This is not the first time a William Golding novel has made me cry, and I'm sure it won't be the last. I couldn't fall asleep last night when I finished it because I couldn't stop thinking about it.
The amazing thing about this book is just how well Golding takes you into another way of existing and seeing the world. It really doesn't feel human, but we can relate to it. He keeps this up for the entire book, and although it requires you to take your time, maybe reading things twice to figure out what exactly is going on, it's well worth it.
Most of all, I was amazed at how much Golding makes this book an exercise in compassion and empathy beyond our own species.

There's a lot to consider and reflect on. Some of what precisely was going on was confusing at times, but this maybe reflects the confusion experienced by Lok as his world is taken from him.
