Fantastic!

I thought this was a great historical fiction book - it keeps you engaged all along, I'd say even more so than Pillars of the Earth which at times can be slow (I did read this book a very long time ago so my perception could be wrong). The research done with regards to World War I was excellent and the reader gets to learn a lot about it. Obviously some people will claim that the scope of the book is too broad and that it tries to simplify all the events that happened during those years, but I'd disagree in that as a historical fiction book it's mostly aimed at giving the reading a bit more of an understanding of what happened during those years.

The story line in terms of the characters is quite predictable, but it doesn't make you like (or dislike) them any less, and even though the narrative follows the lives of various different families, it isn't done so in a confusing way.

What I liked most about the book was that it made me want to learn more about WWI, and I often found myself doing my own research after reading about certain characters and events, which for me, means the book's objective was a success.

Can't wait to read next book. Ken Follett does it again!

Well written. A marvelous glimpse into events leading to WWI.

adventurous emotional mysterious reflective tense medium-paced

I am a sucker for these large books ranging over several families and over a time frame, this one of WW1. Follett has been a favorite writer for many years and he does not fail to keep me interested in this first of a trilogy. Several families are followed through the time of WW1, interwoven in their many experiences.

I was skeptical of this book because I don't love war stories but this was so much more than that. If you don't fall in love with the characters, you're dead inside.

Too me three tries but I finally finished this massive book! I enjoyed it but its not as good as Pillars of the Earth. Still, a good read.

Genial.
